The Long Walk
On Saturday, May 6, join me, for a very special Walk on the legendary MCG Oval with great Australian heroes from the world of football, entertainment and Aboriginal heritage.
Here is your opportunity to take another step towards one united Australia. This is not about indigenous Australia and white Australia – but about ALL AUSTRALIA.
The aim of the May 6 event, is to generate support and awareness NOW for the 2006 Long Walk campaign - building to the official 2006 Long Walk event in December. Our walk precedes the very special AFL “Dreamtime at the G” game between Essendon and Richmond.
Dreamtime at the G is a joint initiative between AFL clubs Essendon and Richmond, with the total backing of the AFL, to capture the spirit of ‘one’ Australia.
I invite you to gather at the traditional Birrarung Marr site (on the banks of the Yarra River, below Federation Square), from 3pm, May 6, to enjoy some unique entertainment from indigenous and non-indigenous performers.
At around 5.30pm, we will head off together for the short walk over the William Barak footbridge in a symbolic walk to launch the 2006 Long Walk campaign.
The first 1000 people who register at Birrarung Marr on May 6, will then walk ONTO the MCG, to be part of the sensational pre-match entertainment.
All other walkers, (and I encourage you all to buy a ticket), with tickets to the Dreamtime at the G game, will head to their seats in the stadium for some amazing pre-match entertainment by great artists including Christine Anu, Renee Geyer, Kutcha Edwards, Paul Kelly and Peter Garrett.
With the MCG lights off – and 1000 glo sticks glowing around three campfires on the ‘G’ – the atmosphere will be electric as these outstanding performers capture the emotion of the event. It is an experience not to be missed.
The audience will not only be the expected 60,000-plus in the MCG stands – but an entire national audience as the pre-entertainment is beamed around Australia by Channel 10.
Come on – let’s get together again for one Australia.
See you there!
Michael Long
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
Only 1000 walkers are allowed onto the MCG oval to be part of the pre-match entertainment.
However, we encourage and invite EVERYONE, including walkers from the 2005 Long Walk, Essendon and Richmond supporters, and the general public, to come along to enjoy the Birrarung Marr entertainment, plus take part in the symbolic walk over the footbridge to the MCG area.
We encourage you to buy a ticket to the Dreamtime game at the MCG to watch the outstanding pre-entertainment and then the match between Essendon and Richmond.
REGISTRATION & ENTRY TO MCG:
1. Registration (1000 people only) to walk on the ground is via a $5 donation – for which you will receive a Long Walk Glo Stick.
The 1000 walkers will then carry the Glo Sticks onto the MCG. The MCG lights will be turned off during the walk onto the G and during the pre-match entertainment. Special spotlights will illuminate the centre of the ground, together with the Glo Sticks. It will look extraordinary!
2. Registration will be available from 3pm at Birrarung Marr at registration booths. We encourage you to be early to be one of the 1000.
3. Registered walkers on the MCG will exit the MCG oval before the ball is bounced for the Essendon v Richmond game. These walkers will need to have purchased a normal general admission ticket to re-enter the MCG to watch the game.
4. All other Long Walk launch walkers will need to have purchased, or be in possession of, a ticket into the MCG stadium to watch the pre-game entertainment and actual Dreamtime match. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster prior to May 6, or at the ground on the day UNLESS SOLD OUT BEFORE.
5. Essendon and Richmond are both donating a portion of the match ticket sales to the Long Walk campaign – and the aim is to fill the MCG for the Dreamtime game.
