Dustin Martin lost $50 bet on teammate's performance in premiership seasonHerald-Sun
10 September 2020 Tigers premiership player Shaun Grigg has revealed he won a $50 bet with teammate Dustin Martin during Richmond’s 2017 flag-winning season.
Retired midfielder Grigg is now an assistant at Geelong but three years ago he was challenged by Martin to win a centre bounce against current Cats ruckman Josh Jenkins.
Grigg took the bet and managed to win several hit-outs against Jenkins, who was playing for Adelaide at the time, as the Tigers roared to a comfortable victory.
Richmond star Jack Riewoldt spoke with Grigg on radio this week and recalled the wager.
“There’s a funny story about you versus (Jenkins) in the ruck,” Riewoldt said on SEN.
“Dustin Martin bet you $50 when you were in a centre bounce, that you couldn’t jump over the top of him and get a hit-out, which you proceeded to do.
“Dustin has paid you for the bet, hasn’t he?”
Grigg confirmed Martin had settled his debt but admitted he was yet to tell Jenkins about the bet.
“He (Martin) paid me straight after we sung the song later that day.
“I haven’t mentioned (to Jenkins) that there was a wager but I have brought it up about our tussle in the ruck and me actually getting a couple of hit-outs.
“But I didn’t mention there was a bit of a wager.”
Grigg was dubbed a “premiership ruckman” in 2017 after the midfielder made some impressive cameos at stoppages during the drought-breaking premiership season.
“The premiership ruckman (term) does get carried on a little bit,”Grigg added.
“I had a bit of fun with it. It was just to help out Toby (Nankervis) in little spurts in quarters.
“I used to joke around with the opposition ruckman and have a bit of fun with them.
“It was just something so different that those guys had never come up against.
“To create something special and be involved in that year was unbelievable. We were up against it all year.
“Our forward line, you (Riewoldt) were our only tall forward and everybody said we were too young, or we’re too small, or we had those close losses in the year and it was the, ‘that’s the old Richmond’, and ‘Richmond-y’ to lose those games.
“Everything going against us and for us to galvanise and come together and do something special … sometimes now I catch myself and have a think about and have a smile.”
