15 October 2020Richmond sharpshooter Jack Riewoldt says the Tigers aren’t striving to play ‘unsociable’ footy.
Damien Hardwick’s charges have been mired in off-field disciplinary issues throughout 2020, with Sydney Stack and Callum Coleman-Jones notably sent home and banned for 10 matches for breaking COVID-19 protocols in September.
On the ground, spearhead Tom Lynch has repeatedly attracted the attention of the match review officer, and was cleared along with skipper Trent Cotchin for incidents in the Tigers’ semi-final win over the Saints.
“There’s been a lot made of the ‘unsociable Tigers’ and it’s not something that we go out and try to be,” Riewoldt explained on SEN Breakfast.
“I know from my own point of view I’m not a fiery person, but we’ve got some guys that play their best footy when they’re playing that aggressive, physical brand of football.
“(Tom) Lynch has been highlighted more than anyone else, and that’s when we feel like he’s at (his) best. We are playing for an important thing, and that’s a spot in a Grand Final.”
Riewoldt expects a hostile environment at the Adelaide Oval tomorrow night, with fans having been allowed into the ground since the competition resumed in June.
“There will be some Richmond supporters there, so we’ll be taking solace in that we will have some support behind enemy lines.
“It’s an exciting challenge, they’re the form team of the competition finishing first on the ladder, and they had a good win in the first final and a rest.”
Riewoldt hopes the flexibility of the Tigers’ forward line can test the Power, who were the stingiest defence over the home-and-away season.
“We’ll give them plenty of different looks, and the strength of our group (is) that we can go tall and go small.
“We’ve got some amazing small forwards. Adding Shai Bolton into that forward mix more than midfield last week, he’s a guy that we can play deep as well.
“We feel like we can challenge them when one thing isn’t working and try something new. We’ve got a few tricks up our sleeve.”
Tall utility Mabior Chol is in the selection mix once more, and Riewoldt fondly remembered his impact the last time the two sides met.
“He had that one bit of play where he paddled it down and made three or four efforts along the wing and we were able to get a goal out of it, so we see that real big upside in him and what he provides us.”
