24 February 2021Having experienced the holy grail on the football field, Tom Lynch is now chasing that success on the racetrack.
The dual Richmond premiership player was on hand to launch the Victoria Racing Club's Autumn Racing Carnival on Tuesday and despite spending the past few months away from the football field, it hasn't stopped the powerhouse forward kicking goals on the sporting field.
Lynch is a part-owner of the Anthony and Sam Freedman trained Starcaster, who has won his most recent two starts at The Valley under Jamie Kah, including the Torney Night Cup on February 12.
"I have always loved to follow the horses and have a small share in a runner at the moment, Starcaster, which has won its last two, which has been fun," Lynch explained on Tuesday.
"Lachie Hunter and a lot of the Western Bulldogs boys are in it and through my manager asked if I wanted to come in on it.
"It has been the first horse I have been involved with, so it has been good fun.
"All the luck has probably dried up for me now."
Starcaster was imported from Europe midway through 2019 having won two races with Jedd O'Keeffe and has now won three races Down Under.
Lynch admitted a few of his fellow premiership players also shared a passion for racing.
"Nathan Broad loves the horses and Jack Graham, they are probably the main two that enjoy it," Lynch said.
"We have a two-year-old that we recently got involved in which we haven't named yet with a few Richmond boys coming up in the spring."
Lynch was at Flemington on Tuesday in the lead-up to Saturday's Australian Guineas and the start of the Autumn Carnival.
"It was great fun to be here this morning and obviously the Autumn Carnival is an exciting time of year at Flemington and it's amazing facilities," said Lynch.
"Definitely during the spring when we are normally in our off-season it has always been good fun to come to Flemington."
With Richmond set to take on Carlton in the AFL season opener on Thursday March 18, Lynch said excitement is high at Punt Road as the Tigers aim for a third-successive AFL premiership in 2021.
"We have got a practice match on Friday against Melbourne, I think everyone is pretty confident this time of year with pre-season … so we will see how we go on Friday and build into Round 1," Lynch said.
