Is it time to pause season 2021?
« on: July 20, 2021, 01:50:35 PM »
Just interested in people's opinions on this (and no non-footy/politics talk please).

Due to the latest covid outbreak, matches are being cancelled or moved without notice and moreso teams are losing key players right at the last minute before games due to them being linked to exposure sites.

So, is the integrity of this season being compromised and should there be a pause like last year?

Or should the AFL continue to plough through and everyone just accepts what happens happens to get the season completed by late September even if it becomes blatantly unfair to some clubs vying for the finals and/or the flag?

nb. Obviously, from a self-interest point of view it would be good for us to have a pause but that's not the main reason I'm asking the question.

Cancel the year and start again in 2022

Create a bubble in Tassie and give them the rest of the season

Pause for as long as it takes to sort out all the states except for NSW.

Might be 2 weeks for Vic, SA, QLD and WA to be ready.

Get Prestia and Vlastuin back. Edwards too. Balta and Broad would get regular games prior to finals.

GWS and Sydney are two clubs that would be open to pausing the season for a week.

The AFL remains steadfast in its desire to plow through despite several obstacles appearing on a daily basis.

Should have been paused 2 weeks ago.  The integrity of the season is stuffed now home games are being played in the oppositions home State.  They did a better job last year

I'd pause for this week now that SA has imposed a hard lockdown

Flick the pre-finals bye (not a fan of it anyway) so that would still ensure the season finishes as per normal.

Biggest mistake the AFL has made with its fixture is not making sure everyone played each once by round 17. They should set the fixture that way anyway. Fixture is always compromised when you have a 22 round season and 18 teams. Fairest thing is to have all teams play each other once and then work out who plays a 2nd time based on the previous season final ladder positions...

They've got themselves in a mess right now because we have teams that haven't played each other yet.

We managed to finish the season last year using hubs
Why can’t we do something similar again ?

Don't really care either way, but if I had to choose it's to have a break which also allows our players to come back and bring home the 3peat.

According to Footy Classified last night, if the AFL only included playing teams once on the ladder then we'd be in the Eight and Essendon would be down to 12th (they've played Norf twice).

I say cancel the year, abandon it altogether and start again in 2022.
It’s our only hope to go back to back to back!

Good post WP.

You think they'd have learned after 2020 that the only way to have a season with any integrity is to do that, allowing for 5 weeks of lost time with nobody who can cry foul.

Want the season cancelled just to see the reactions from Melbourne & Geelong supporters.... :shh
