WHY JACK RIEWOLDT WOULD BE A GOOD FIT FOR NORTH MELBOURNE

By Hugh Fitzpatrick
SEN
6 July 2022

Adam Cooney believes Jack Riewoldt would be a perfect fit for North Melbourne, should Richmond not offer the star forward a contract for the 2023 season.

Riewoldt, 33, remains out of contract with seven games left in the home and away season, but has not yet been definitive regarding if he wants to play on next year.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick was asked on Monday night whether the Tigers would offer Riewoldt a contract for next year, providing a coy response that has invited speculation about the veteran forward’s future at Punt Road.

“Look, Jack is a wonderful player, he’s been an outstanding player for us and we’re in dialogue with him,” Hardwick said.

“But we’ve got a lot of decisions to make, we’ve got an ageing profile and a young demographic coming through.

“Some decisions will be made but Jack is playing some very, very good footy.”

Responding to Hardwick’s comments, Cooney believes Riewoldt’s current output warrants a contract extension.

“Unless he drops off the perch in the next eight weeks, I think he’s certainly done enough to warrant another contract next year,” Cooney said on SEN’s The Run Home.

“He’s going to end up with 40+ goals, that’s a pretty handy return considering Tom Lynch is their main focal point down there and he’s really unselfish with the way that he moves the footy.

“For him to kick 40 goals and still be the leader in that forward line, unless he has two soft tissue injuries and really starts to slow down over the next couple of months, he could really have an impact.”

The Age’s Jake Niall reported on Monday afternoon that the Kangaroos are in the market for an “experienced” and “highly-respected” veteran player similar to Luke Hodge’s move to Brisbane in 2018.

If Richmond do decide to move Riewoldt on, Cooney says the three-time premiership player would be an ideal fit for the suffering North Melbourne Football Club.

“We speak about the leaders that North Melbourne need, if Damien Hardwick is up in the air about whether Jack plays on next year, he could certainly have that Luke Hodge style of leadership and add that to North Melbourne,” Cooney added.

“I think he plays on regardless. If Damien Hardwick says, ‘sorry Jack, we’re going with youth, we think Noah Bolta can work better than yourself with Tom Lynch down there’, then Jack can just walk down to Arden Street and hopefully straighten them up over the next couple of years.”

Riewoldt is second on the list for most games played for the Tigers, behind Kevin Bartlett only, and has kicked 742 goals which has him fourth on the club’s overall standings.

Jack might actually consider it if it was the Tassie Kangaroos  :shh.

Seriously though, the sudden rise in the number of articles and commentary this week hoping with zero evidence that Richmond falls apart with star players leaving must only mean they are all scared of us again and what we can do this year.

You would not get odds in a market for this.

There is absolutely no chance on earth Jack would leave for this type of thing. Agree MT maybe Tassie. But North. No.

We've tried Balta as a key forward presumably that was an eye to the future to see if Noah could replace Jack or Lynch (if injured). However, Balta is a far better and more natural key defender. Both he and Gibcus are swingmen who can be thrown forward to pinch a goal rather than permanent key forwards. Bauer is really the only young key forward on our list but he's not ready for AFL yet. Still learning his way at state league level.

Jack should get another year. 2023 will be his last IMHO.

RIEWOLDT RESPONDS TO COONEY’S NORTH MELBOURNE SUGGESTION

Andrew Slevison
SEN
8 July 2022

Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt has responded to a suggestion from Adam Cooney that perhaps he could continue his career at North Melbourne.

The 2008 Brownlow Medallist floated the idea on SEN earlier this week, saying if the Tigers opted against offering Riewoldt a contract for 2023 then he would be a good fit for the struggling Kangaroos.

Having read Cooney’s contemplations, Riewoldt laughed off the suggestion, however, did acknowledge that “you never want to say no” to such ideas.

“Our friend Adam Cooney, who works at SEN, he was the one who proposed this,” Riewoldt said on SEN Tassie.

“I know he’s got a boxing fight coming up, and I’m not 100 per cent sure if that’s still going ahead, because Adam might have copped a knock to the head beforehand when he’s rolled this one out.

“It’s an interesting one because you never want to say no to these sort of things because when you come to the end of your career… I have an idea in my head what my pathway looks like out of football, when that is I’m not 100 per cent sure.

“But you never want to say no because someone could come and say something from left field and say, ‘Hey, have you ever thought about doing this?’.

“Because I’ve got an idea what I want to do, maybe I haven’t thought about everything in my life post football.

“There’s been a lot of commentary around it this week.”

Tigers vice-captain Riewoldt, who has kicked 27 goals this season, is out of contract this year and is yet to make a definitive call on whether or not he will play on next season.

Hes not going to play for Norf and lose by 50 points every week. For Tassie Id reckon hed do it but not for Norf Melbourne. He can stay a 1 club player, a Champion and make his money in the media.
