Future picks plan

AFL clubs are pushing for an overhaul of the draft rules as the players' association moves to lobby for free agency.

At a meeting of the draft working party yesterday, Hawthorn personnel manager Chris Pelchen tabled a proposal to free up the trading and drafting rules.

Under the idea, a club could use a pick one year into the future to help sweeten a trade.

In other words, that club could put forward a draft pick from the current year's draft and another from the following year in exchange for a player.

Trading for future picks would come in handy for gaining a good pick from a (perhaps deluded) club topping up to pinch a flag.
