Looming free agency calls facing every club

With clubs planning their list strategies years in advance, it’s no surprise some are already casting an eye over the potential free agents of 2024, hoping to put any doubts about their future to bed before pre-agents qualify for free agency.

There’s rightly a lot of focus on the free agency class of 2023 and shoring up tenures for those players, but as we’ve learned over several years, it’s never too early to start planning even further ahead.

Foxfooty.com.au breaks down the key players set to qualify for free agency in 2024, which could play a part in contract talks throughout 2023.

RICHMOND

Dustin Martin will be an unrestricted free agent, but there is plenty of water to go under the bridge between now and the close of 2024 and his extremely lucrative contract. Much depends on whether he can overcome the injury niggles that plagued him this year, as well as simply his enjoyment for the game in which he has accomplished everything there is to accomplish.

Ivan Soldo is another unrestricted free agent, but Tigers fans may well be happy just to see him still at Tigerland given there was a chance he was heading to the Giants as part of a deal for Jacob Hopper.

Dion Prestia is a restricted free agent but is likely to either retire or stay put.

Liam Baker, Noah Cumberland and Ben Miller headline the list of non-free agents.

2023 Free Agents

RICHMOND

Dylan Grimes

Jack Riewoldt

Jason Castagna*

Kamdyn McIntosh

Nathan Broad*

Trent Cotchin

* Can qualify as a restricted free agent, as they’re in their 8th or 9th year of service, but only if in the top 25% of payments at the club.

-------------------------------

Nathan Broad (Richmond)

At 29, Broad is in career-best form at the Tigers and was remarkably durable in a back six that struggled to remain fit throughout the season. He and Dylan Grimes are both free agents at the end of next season. There was speculation back in 2020 about a possible trade interstate, but Broad stayed put and continues to perform at a high level. He finished 10th in the best and fairest count this year and still has plenty to offer. Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper’s arrival, coupled with the one-year contract extensions for Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin, means he’ll be around for one more flag tilt. Whatever happens after that will be interesting, with clubs sure to at least ask the question.
