"There will be plenty of lessons to carry into the Bulldogs next week."

Report Card: Round 3

RICHMOND

The Tigers were fortunate not to be “absolutely belted” by the Pies in a “messy” MCG blockbuster. Losing Nathan Broad (suspension), Dustin Martin, Jacob Hopper and Jayden Short (all injured) didn’t help heading into the clash, but it was a meek first half performance. The Tigers hit a 68-year low against Collingwood when they registered just 1.3 (9) to half time. But Richmond did rally in the second to mount two comebacks against the in-form Pies. Richmond won both the hit out (+17) and clearance count (+5) but couldn’t use it to their advantage in the 14-point loss.

In the votes

Liam Baker threw himself at absolutely everything against Collingwood. The ball was camped out in the Magpies forward half but Baker showed his class in the early wet conditions to rack up 32 disposals, a game-high 12 intercepts and seven score involvements. Noah Balta had multiple goal saving moments in the under-siege Tigers backline. Skipper Toby Nankervis gave his all as he finished with 39 hitouts, 20 touches - 11 of them contested and seven tackles.

Room for improvement

The three talls forward line just didn’t work for Richmond in the conditions. Jack Riewoldt, Tom Lynch and Samson Ryan didn’t have an impact in the first half before Ryan was subbed out. Lynch found the footy in the second half but his wayward goal kicking really cost his side. He finished the match with a disposal efficiency of less than 29% from his seven touches. He kicked just the 1.3 against Collingwood. Dylan Grimes was showing his age in defence as he struggled to have an impact. His night ended with 11 touches and just one mark.

SEN Breakfast’s Kane Cornes and Nathan Buckley went through each of the games and discussed which team the result said more about.

Cornes:Richmond, because we know everything we need to know about Collingwood.

“Are Richmond top four worthy? Probably not. Are they a bit sluggish through the midfield, are they a bit slow? Probably.

“And do they have the upcoming talent under the age of 24 that some of the other teams do? I’ll probably say no.

“I think the result says more about the Tigers.”

Lynch had only a goal and seven touches against the Magpies, while Riewoldt had two goals from his six touches and one mark. Riewoldt, in what shapes as his final season, has five goals in three games, and his form may be debated at match committee.

“We didn’t play very well at all, and we still only got beaten by 14 points. We are still confident that if we get it right, we will be pretty strong,” Balme said.

The Key Takeaway: Dimma knew his side’s limitations

Damien Hardwick knew his Tigers side was down on personnel so went about making it a tough night for the Magpies.

He set up to thwart Collingwood’s system which had kicked massive scores in Rounds 1 and 2.

The strategy worked for some of the night and gave the Tigers a sneaky chance when they got within a goal in the second half.

While it didn’t end in a win, and the Pies were inaccurate, it showed that the current (equal) flag favourites can be tamed within games.

The Positive: Baker brilliance

Liam Baker’s beginning to the season has been superb.

He was comfortably Richmond’s best player against the Pies, providing constant drive from the back half.

Baker finished with a team-high 32 disposals and a game-high 12 intercepts, plus 10 rebound 50s while impacting forward of centre with seven score involvements and three inside 50s.

He sets the tone with his attack on the ball and is frequently one of the Tigers’ most consistent performers.

Dimma gives 4 to Bakes and 1 to Nank and McCrae gives all his votes to his own players?  I didn't think I'd ever dislike McCrae after his time with our VFL program but FM the guy is showing his true colours now.

Richmond 'unrecognisable' from premiership three-peat

Altogether the Tigers had 81 turnovers and took just nine marks inside 50. Garry Lyon said the current team look "unrecognisable" to the one that won three flags in four years.

“It could have been a lot worse,” Lyon said of the 14-point margin. “I don’t think they are the Richmond of (the past), they’re not going to maintain the standard of when they won three premierships in four (years). Some of their guns, their most influential players are getting older and that’s just life.

"It’s going to happen to Jack (Riewoldt), it’s happening to Trent (Cotchin), Dylan Grimes. They’re not the players they once were.”

Glad I was at this game to witness Collingwoods March premiership.
