THE 2024 MID-SEASON TRADES THAT JUST MAKE SENSE AS IT STANDSKane Cornes
SEN
24 October 2023Get ready for 12 months a year of trade talk.
The official trade period ended last Wednesday, and we’ve already seen significant trade stories break since.
...
Like a dog with a bone, Sam McClure says that Dustin Martin will finish his career with the Gold Coast Suns.
The AFL must love it, a full 12 months of player movement conversation.
They are embracing it further and have agreed with the AFL Players Association to introduce a mid-season trade period.
New CEO Andrew Dillion described it as an "even money" possibility. I’d say it's happening.
So depending on how the first half of the year plays out, let's look at some mid-season trades that make sense next year.
2. Tom LynchRichmond’s list desperately needs a mini rebuild and access to first-round draft picks. They may be able to cash in on the 31-year-old who played just four games last year and is still getting around in a moon boot.
If Melbourne is in premiership contention mid-year, you’d expect them to pay a significant bounty for Lynch, whom Richmond would be delusional not to let go.
3. Dustin MartinMartin plays game number 300 in Round 11, which is perfect timing if he is considering a move to the Gold Coast.
Most expect the Suns, under new coach Damien Hardwick, to be in contention this season, and we've seen they are prepared to hand off first-round draft picks like parents hand out lollies at Halloween. Like Lynch, Richmond would be foolish not to cash in on Martin mid-year to fast-track the rebuild.
