As with any successful organisation, with time, the personnel of that organisation are poached, change career or just retire. We are seeing that happen before our eyes.

1 - O'Neill - President
2 - Gale - CEO (Pending move to Tas)
3 - Hardwick - Head Coach
4 - Clarke - Recruiting
5 - Numerous Premiership Players (over the next 2-3 years, there may not be many actually left on the list!)
6 - Balme - Mentor

Change and losing key personnel can bring anxiety, especially when coming from a sustained period of success, but, if it is managed right, it can also be a very exciting time, with new people with new ideas. It just takes a little time, to find the right people. We are starting to see a little of that with Yze.

The next CEO has very BIG shoes to fill

It’s always onwards and upwards.

It’s exciting but also makes me nervous because in the last 20 years we’ve seen how differently our club has been run and we don’t want to go back go how it was… so how do you ensure that doesn’t happen?  It’s tough.

They’re the names who have done the heavy lifting at the Tigers for the best part of a decade, delivering three premierships to Punt Road.

But it was Richmond’s next tier of players, the likes of Rhyan Mansell, Thomson Dow, Ben Miller and Maurice Rioli, who really stood up and played key roles in securing an exciting Tigers win against the Swans.

“It was the young blokes… (Adem Yze) said ‘this is going to be your team, go and do something’ and they’ve come away with the win against Sydney,” said Melbourne champion Garry Lyon on Fox Footy’s On the Couch.

“Mansell was outstanding, the pressure he put on, Thomson Dow laid big tackles, Ben Miller doing the job in the back half, third highest rated game and Maurice Rioli goes and lays six tackles and has 17 touches and changes the whole look of that forward 50 from a pressure point of view.

“There was that tangible difference, but it was the intangible as well. It was their spirit, they refused to lie down.”

The Swans had kicked six goals in a row early in the third term, but the next generation Tigers steadied and held their nerve.

“The young fellas bought in, but the senior players bought in as well and played their role exceptionally well,” added Collingwood champion Nathan Buckley.

Tom Lynch, who is set to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines due to a hamstring tendon injury, booted three goals, while Liam Baker kicked two majors and had 21 touches.

The question now is, can these young cubs continue to back it up?

The changing face of Richmond’s senior leaders

Damien Hardwick (coach)
Triple premiership coach Hardwick was at Richmond for 13 and a half seasons and 307 games before quitting mid-2023 citing burnout. Replacement Adem Yze has made a strong start internally but an injury-ravaged Tigers side has won only a single game.

Peggy O’Neal (president)
O’Neal was elected to president in 2013 and shepherd the club through its most successful period of the modern era with three flags before departing in 2022 for Plenary founder John O’Rourke, who has so far been a steady but very low-profile replacement. He is hugely regarded inside Richmond and across the industry.

Trent Cotchin (captain)
Cotchin and fellow star Jack Riewoldt retired at the end of 2023 after putting their cultural and leadership imprint on the club as well as starring in the three premierships. Toby Nankervis is a popular captain but few have had the impact of Cotchin.

Matthew Clarke (head recruiter)
Clarke joined the club in 2009 and became head recruiter seven years later before being poached this year by West Coast. He played a key role in the club’s successes as he recruited out-and-out stars and value selections like Liam Baker and Shai Bolton. Replaced by ex-Saints recruiter Chris Toce.

Dustin Martin (triple Norm Smith Medallist)
Martin turns 33 next month and is less likely to play elsewhere despite recent speculation as he battles with his motivation to thrive in a bottom-four team. Rivals are less likely to offer deals given his reduced output but Richmond is open to re-signing him next year.

Blair Hartley (Richmond list boss)
The long-time list boss has been elevated to a senior role splitting the football department responsibilities between him and Tim Livingstone, but is now being headhunted by Tasmania. It would be a plum role given the welter of picks and list allowances to be handed to the club in coming seasons.
