Match-ups/ Who gets Harvey, Dal Santo and Riewoldt?
« on: July 26, 2006, 04:57:57 AM »
The Saints midfield has been a bit off since Hayes did his knee combined with Ball carrying OP and a lack of quality tap ruckman. The bombers almost got them in the wet and Lade turned the game last week for Port and almost won them the game. We need a dominant game from Simmo.

How do you guys think we'll match-up?

Robert Harvey even though he's in his 30s always seems to have a day out against us and rack up the possessions while Dal Santo is elusive. Who gets those two?

In defence Gas will get Gehrig. Schulz held Riewoldt well last time before Hamill slammed him into the Dome turf and broke his collarbone. Do we play Sarge at CHB this week with no Thursty :( or Razor?

Raines to shut down that little twirp Milne. Hope Milne brings the same shocking goalkicking boots as last week  :pray.

One Saint who is in form is Gram. He has taken over Aussie Jones' old role and set up many of their rebounding attacks this year. I wouldn't be surprised if we put an offensive tag on him. Perhaps Polo or Hyde to make him accountable.

Up forward we can't rely too much on a non-100% Richo. Even when the big fella has been fully fit Richo seems to want to wrestle with Hudghton instead of running him around. Who else will kick the goals for us? Just 7 goals in the past two weeks is pathetic.

Thoughts?

Gaspar will get first crack at Gehrig

Joel should take Riewoldt and run him around and make Riewoldt accountable

I'd go Suga on Harvey with the option of him being able to counter attack. The other option is Tiv on Harvey with the role being purely to negate. This would allow Suga to play the attacking mid-fielder and give us some attacking leadership

Polo on Del Santo.

But we need to get more out of the centre from Tucky, Lids and Foley

That's the spirit Ramps  :rollin. Sadly I think you might be proven right  :(.

Agree WP we need to win some centre clearances otherwise it'll get very ugly  :-\. Might skip the idea of Tivs on Harvey though. We don't want Harvs getting 40 possessions lol.

Agree Joel will probably get Riewoldt as we don't have a choice  :-\ unless we rob peter to pay paul and move Sarge into defence. The only problem with Joel doing it is the Saints will play through Riewoldt to force Joel to play him tight and we would lose Joel's rebounding off the half-back line.

No worries Ramps. I can't say I disagree with you. I hope I'm wrong but I think we're gone for the year too. Other sides around us and making their run for September and we can't go with them as the pressure intensifies with each week being a big game. You can't expect our youngsters to carry us at this time of year. We're not skillful and especially footy smart enough yet teamwork wise to make the Eight this year IMHO.

Just to re-iterate what I have said many times - The young Lions and the young saints just before they went BANG showed good early signs before fading later in the season when they were young, just as we are now. I think this can also be evidenced by Coburg's form in the VFL also tappering off.
No big disaster really and pretty much what i expected this year and probably next while these young guys get games under their belts.
If it is still happening into 2008 then I will be concerned. We still may have a surprise or 2 in store (good or bad) and lets hope we can upset some teams going into the finals, just to pee them off. :gotigers
