Club Corner - August 7
« on: August 07, 2006, 11:29:55 PM »
Brian Royal

* Tactically the way we set up in the first quarter all worked but we couldn't finish off on the scoreboard which was disappointing.

* We put alot of work in goalkicking and it disappoints the coaching staff. Mostly above the shoulders. Not just Paddy but all our guys. We need to continue to work with our guys and it costs us every week. Its the difference between a very good player and a good player.

* We train broadly on all areas of the game. To improve they need to spend time on their goalkicking. Guys need to use their spare time.

* Field kicking let us down too. 4 or 5 of the Bulldogs first quarter goals were from our turnovers.

* We need to work on our kicking over preseason. On an individual basis if a bloke can't improve then we need to find guys who can kick well.

* Positives - Howat obviously. Almost up there with Polo's debut. Lids, Tambling, Polo and even White who was a late replacement were good. Hall and Joel on Brad Johnson did well. Howat will definitely play again this week.

* Struggling with injuries and having trouble to field a side. We are just hoping a couple of Coburg players put their hand up to put pressure on the current 22. No excuse though as the Doggies had injuries and we had 22 blokes on the field just as they did.

* We'll continue to blood young kids in the next few years. Hope the supporters stick with us as success will come. Perhaps not next year but the year after.

* Need to rid ourselves of the 100 point blowouts. Young developing sides have these mishaps.

* We can't take the Brissy game lightly with Brisbane missing Brown, Aker, Leppitsch, etc....

Cam Howat was interviewed next but I've put that in the Howat thread.

Paul Armstrong

* Injury update:-

JON in hospital now. Had pins puts in today and will miss the season obviously. Collided with his opponent and broke his collarbone as there wasn't much muscle there.

Meyer - pulled up sore after training last week and they found a stress fracture in his foot. Last heard he was going to the doctors to see if he needs to wear a special boot or needs an op. Should be fine by the start of the preseason.

McGuane - hurt his knee a little bit. Better today so an outside chance to play this week.

* Bulldogs were a bit more polished than us and kicked the ball longer early on. Our goalkicking was deplorable and we didn't use the footy to well but pleased with the effort. Got a flukely sniff in the last but they got a late goal to stretch the margin out to 22 points.

* Young guys who haven't had a game (Cass, Limbach) might get a go. Don't know yet. People say yes as we'll miss the finals but making the finals wasn't the main aim at the start of the year. We wanted improvement. Essendon and Calrton games are winnable so still a chance to finish off the year positively.

* We want to get 60 games or so into the kids as quick as possible. The sooner that happens the faster we become a more consistent side. A bonus that we've been reasonably competitive while introducing younger guys.

They replayed Royce Hart interview from last year.

Ryan O'Connor

* Game against Frankston was a shocker.

* 7 changes from the previous week as result of injuries starting to mount. Not using that as an excuse though.

* Last time we played Frankston we had a stronger line-up and we were playing better as a side.

* We didn't have anyone to combat the Frankston forwards.

* Best - Kel Moore played well down back as he saw a fair bit of the ball back there and would be in line for a RFC game. Humm did pretty well too. Knobel was great in the clinches even though he was obviously lacking match fitness. McGuane was doing alright before hurting his knee (O'Connor said he'll miss 2-3 weeks). Limbach didn't do too badly either.

* 2 games left as we have the bye in the middle of the last 3 rounds. We'll play finals but where we finish we don't know. The last few weeks have been disappointing as we were challenging for a top 4 spot.

* This week - vs Bendigo in Bendigo on Sunday at QEII Oval.

* First week of VFL finals corresponds with Richmond's final game against West Coast. We won't begrudge any RFC player who qualifies for the VFL finals but wants to play at the higher AFL level.

Doing goalkicking for 10-15 minutes as an afterthought after 2 hours of training isn't good enough. They need to be fresh and to organise time individually or as small groups to work on it for 30-60mins a day during the week. Sure it might bore their brains out but that's how important goalkicking is. Everyone is striving for that little extra over other sides in terms of fitness, medical, recovery, etc yet here's an area that hasn't improved with professionalism especially at Punt Rd and we are paying it no respect. Not to mention tactically every time you miss you gift a side like the Doggies a coast to coast chain of possessions.

But there's just no reason why they've been inaccurate this year.  Nearly every game we've played there hasn't been a breath of wind  :banghead

Not enough practice to entrench a routine despite the mental game pressure and our boys don't get blasted by the coaching staff for poor attempts at goal unlike other areas of training. They are left to their own devices. No point having fun with banana kicks at goal from the boundary if you're record is 3.10 from straight set shots  :shh.

The point I am trying to make is that they should use their spare time.

What about if the players pay a $50-100 fine for every easy shot they miss?

There can be a lot of wind in there after a big lunch.
