FORMER champions generally are frugal with their praise for those who follow them.
It's not that they are mean-spirited, more that they are hard-markers, given their own achievements and those of teammates in great teams.
I sat with several Richmond legends, including Francis Bourke and Michael Green, at the Roaring Forties post-Grand Final luncheon yesterday, and one of the topics was the career of Michael Voss.
Bourke and Green have impeccable credentials, with nine premierships between them and teammates including Royce Hart, Kevin Bartlett and Ian Stewart.
Both spoke glowingly and unreservedly of Voss.
They acknowledged him for his talent and leadership and as one of the rare players, who, in Green's words, could "pick his team up and carry it across the line".
