Rivalry revival

One of the old VFA’s great rivalries will be revived early next month when the Coburg Tigers take on Port Melbourne at Punt Road in a big VFL encounter.

From late in the 19th century, through to the early part of the 20th century, before Richmond joined the VFL, the Tigers had a fierce rivalry with Port Melbourne.

The two teams first met at Punt Road on May 24, 1886, with Port 2.16 defeating Richmond 0.5.

Their last clash at Punt Road took place on June 15, 1907, with Richmond 14.7 thrashing Port 1.15.

All-up at Punt Road, during those VFA days the teams played 23 times, Richmond winning 12, Port 9 and two drawn matches.

Now, some 97 years on, hostilities will resume at Punt Road when Richmond’s VFL affiliate, the Coburg Tigers, hosts Port Melbourne at Punt Road on Sunday, July 4.

With Richmond playing interstate that weekend (against Brisbane at the Gabba the previous night), it’s a great way for Tiger fans to get their footy fix in a true traditional sense.

On ya WP. No rest for the wicked  ;).

Coburg side:

B: Roach Young Jorgenson
HB: Gilmour Morrison Marsh
C: Rogers Dragicevic Houlihan
HF: Carlson Talbot Hartigan
F: Fiora Jackson Rayson
R: O’Connor Pagan Fletcher

Inter: Raines, Foley, Kuret, Randello, Maggiore, Daniher, McDonald, Carlyle

You would think having Raines and Foley starting on the ground would be in Richmond's best interests  ???. Moreso than Rogers and Fletcher at least.

See Jackson was named B.O.G. for Coburg today. It'll be interesting to hear how he went from those that saw the game live.

A good weekend for our young blokes stepping up.

I thought Jackson was very good. Has to play senior footy this season subject to his school commitments of course. He reads the play so well and is terrific overhead.

He has a bit of mongrel and cheek in him too.

In the 2nd quarter he pressured some Port Melbourne bloke (no. 11) and as result it was kicked out on the full. About 2-3 minutes later Jackson gave away a free to the the same Port guy - while he was on the mark, Jackson is saying stuff like "go on mate kick over there again (pointing to the boundary), try mate you can do it". The port bloke had a teammate about 20 metres away by himself - No. 11 kicked it about 3 metres short and Coburg was able to clear. It was great - bloody funny too. :D ;D ;D
