Tigers out to make early point
By Jackie Epstein
Sunday Herald-Sun
December 17, 2006

IT is only December, but party time is already over for Richmond AFL players.

Tigers players have been warned not to affect their recovery by going out on weekends. Welcome to the scientific world of pre-season training.

Strength and conditioning coach Matt Hornsby runs a tight program and in only six weeks has already squeezed out personal best times from some of his charges.

The only days off are Sunday with each week involving activities from weights, boxing, swimming, running, skills training, rowing, cricket to match simulation.

Players are now getting used to being watched. Each session is judged and analysed by the assistant coaches and specialist boxing, weights and fitness coaches.

Points are accumulated and the top 15 snare an automatic start in the first NAB Cup game.

Narrow leader Brett Deledio said a welcome pressure had been added through the scheme's implementation.

"I'm looking forward to the Christmas break, put it that way," Deledio said.

"We did a repeat speed test which was just horrific. Couldn't sit down, couldn't walk, couldn't stand - our bodies were just aching after it. It's been solid but good.

"I wanted to come back reasonably fit. Last year I didn't do much because of International Rules.

"I thought that would get me through, but that was a mistake."

Another strong mover has been captain Kane Johnson, who overtook early pacesetters Nathan Foley and Cameron Howat at the board's unveiling yesterday.

In a practice match, for instance, players are judged on foot skills, defensive skills and overall contribution.

"Especially when you haven't had success for a while, I think you've got to try some different things to try to move your way up the ladder and for this club, we're all about making improvements," Johnson said.

"Everyone came back as fit as I've ever seen a group come back so I think that's a fair indication the boys are pretty keen to have a good crack at it. I think with everything going right next year if we don't make finals it's a massive failure and we all know that."

Those keen to impress include the five top draft picks from 2004 - Deledio, Richard Tambling, Danny Meyer, Adam Pattison and Dean Polo.

Tambling, in particular, is "just killing them out there", according to the captain.

"Hopefully it's our time to turn it on. It's our third year now so we're working on it," Tambling said.

"I know I'll be working really hard to try and get myself up into the midfield."

While the usual suspects such as Nathan Brown and Matthew Richardson are also shining among the top 10, the rehab group - Chris Newman, Will Thursfield, Mark Coughlan, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls, Chris Hyde, Brent Hartigan and Trent Knobel - has also come a long way.

continued....

Newman, who broke his leg in Round 13, joined in his first full running session on Wednesday at Victoria Park.

His recovery is on track and Round 1 is tentatively being pencilled in following a probable NAB Cup start.

"I'm finally starting to compete a bit and I was very nervous (before the run)," Newman said.

"Browny often tells me what he wished he'd done if he could have his time back. He's been good.

"It's not only the physical side, but the mental side as well which is tough. They said I could take the rod out (of my leg) before Christmas, but I don't want to rush it and risk setting myself back."

Newman has been elevated to the leadership group, along with ruckman Troy Simmonds and Coughlan. They join Johnson, Brown and Joel Bowden.

Brown has enjoyed watching Newman's progress and is thrilled with his own.

"There's a bit of a burning desire because I still don't think I've got the best out of myself," Brown said.

"I played some consistent football but I haven't got the best out of my ability and I've still got years to go. It's something that is driving me at the moment.

"All the guys are going well. It's gone pretty quick so that means it's been enjoyable."

New development coach Craig McRae said the enthusiasm at the club was better than he saw at the Lions.

"Training has been enormous," he said.

"My memories are of working hard, but nowhere near as much as this at this time. So it's been a real eye-opener in that sense."

But for all the sweat, hard yards and time pounding in the gym, there are no real prizes on offer yet.

Coach Terry Wallace said the NAB 15 system would give him a much clearer direction when selecting the side and that it would breed a culture of discipline. But perhaps Brown sums up the feeling at Punt Road best.

"In November and December there's a hell of a lot of heroes at every football club," he said.

"There's blokes who can run the tan in 10 minutes and blokes who can lift 150kg in bench presses. But at the end of the day it's about getting the footy.

"We finished ninth this year so we have one more position to climb and anything other than finals should be put down as a lost opportunity."

Obviously not the reigning premiers philosophy this preseason  :shh  :wallywink.

Blingers had the turbo chargers going in the midfield at training on Wednesday. Hopefully a sign this AFL caper is clicking for him. It's hard not to get excited when you see Foley, Tambo and Lids running amok in the midfield even if only in a intra-club practice match.

My brother was talking to Dean Polo at the Maffra pub Saturday night, not sure what he was drinking, but they did go over to Ringers together later, I just hope Dean didn't pick up, the girls at Ringers are quite atrocious.

He also told my brother to 'watch out for the tigers' this coming season!!!

I am not sure if he was pre-warning my brother about his trip to Africa, or to watch out for the Richmond football club.
And you may not think I care for you
