Richmond edge out Magpies in AFL trial
The Age
March 16, 2007 - 7:29PM

Richmond withstood two last-quarter surges from Collingwood to claim a seven-point win in their AFL trial match in Red Cliffs near Mildura in Victoria.

Down by 23 points at three-quarter time, the Magpies put up strong fourth quarter effort to boot four goals and twice close the gap to within seven points.

Two majors to Tarkyn Lockyer and others to Anthony Rocca and Paul Licuria had the Tiger defence scrambling to hold on in the final stages before a crowd of more than 10,700 at Quandong Park.

The last quarter heroics were left to effervescent forward Nathan Brown, who booted the Tigers' only goal for the term to virtually seal the win, Richard Tambling, Andrew Raines and captain Kane Johnson, who worked tirelessly in the midfield.

Brown enjoyed a solid run in the warm conditions, kicking four goals for the game, while Tambling got better as the afternoon wore on.

Magpie Dale Thomas had a chance to bring his side to within a solitary point late in the game, however his kick at goal from the pocket at the Mildura end missed badly.

Thomas was among the better players for his team, finding plenty of space and showing glimpses of the skill he first demonstrated to AFL fans last season.

Leon Davis electrified the crowd on occasions with his drive through the midfield, while Licuria and Scott Burns were equally conspicuous.

The Magpie camp would have been pleased with the efforts of Travis Cloke, who provided a strong presence up forward and booted two goals in quick succession just before halftime.

Rocca was well held by Joel Bowden and suffered from some indiscriminate delivery inside the forward 50. He managed only one goal for the game.

The Tigers went into the match with close to their best line-up, with only Matthew Richardson, Troy Simmons and Mark Coughlan (all injured) among the few big names absent.

Rookie-listed players Cameron Howat, Jake King and Angus Graham took to the field for Richmond looking to secure the spot on the main list left vacant by Coughlan, who will be out for the season.

The Magpies on the other hand were without the services of skipper Nathan Buckley, who travelled with the team to Sunraysia, Allan Didak, Fremantle recruit Paul Medhurst and Brodie Holland.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said he had been pleased with the efforts of his younger brigade during the hit-out.

"I think every time you come out to play in a competitive nature you want to win where you possibly can - but it (winning) isn't the be all and end all," he said.

"We've got a lot of young boys that we're still trialling... and a few of those boys have really put their hand up and I thought inspired some of our other players with their efforts."

And he said Richardson would be fine for Richmond's round one clash against Carlton.

"I guarantee he's fine," he said.

"He will be absolutely right for round one - there's no problems there. We'll just have to balance our side as to who's in and who's out after a good effort today."

Meanwhile, Malthouse said his side was working on the structure of its forward line following the pre-season departure of Chris Tarrant, and admitted there was still "a lot" of work to be done.

"We haven't kicked a lot of goals in the weeks we've played," he said.

"I think 15 was probably the most against St Kilda two or three weeks ago. (So) we'll play around with it a little bit."

Brown sparks Tigers to win
Nick Sheridan, Mildura

A PROMISING return to form by Nathan Brown was the key to Richmond's seven-point win over Collingwood in a practice match in Mildura yesterday.

Brown kicked four goals, including the penultimate major to put the game beyond doubt for the Tigers, and showed that the goalsneak could be well on his way to the excellent form he displayed before breaking his leg in 2005.

Tigers coach Terry Wallace was impressed by the efforts of his goalsneak. "Nathan played well. You know when the game needs to be done and dusted he's the one who makes sure you get over the line," he said.

Playing in 30-plus-degree heat, the two teams put on an energetic contest, with lots of long kicking and contested marks throughout, before more than 10,000 fans at Quandong Park just outside Mildura. Both teams used ice vests.

Collingwood posted the first score with Scott Burns kicking a point, but Shane Tuck hit back with a major to put Richmond in front — where the Tigers stayed for the rest of the match.

A flash of brilliance from Travis Cloke breathed life into Collingwood's game late in the second term with two goals in as many minutes but the Tigers prevailed, making more of their chances than the young Pies, who were without big names Nathan Buckley, Alan Didak and Brodie Holland, among others.

Brown, Richard Tambling, Brett Deledio and Joel Bowden were among Richmond's best, although rookie Jake King made a strong case for his elevation to the senior list in the absence of the injured Mark Coughlan, with a strong showing in defence. Bowden did an excellent job restricting Anthony Rocca to just one goal.

Graham Polak also impressed, kicking a goal and instrumental in a passage that led to a goal by Jay Schulz.

For the Magpies, Cloke was best and Dale Thomas seemed to be everywhere, his bright shock of hair serving as a beacon for his tenacious attacks on the ball. Paul Licuria was also good, with two goals, and Leon Davis was very active in the midfield.

The Tigers were virtually at full strength, missing only Coughlan, Matthew Richardson and Troy Simmonds.

Goals prove elusive for Pies
17 March 2007   Herald-Sun
Michael Stevens

WHO will kick Collingwood's goals this season? That question remains unanswered after the Magpies were beaten by Richmond in a practice match in front of about 10,000 people at Quandong Park, Red Cliffs last night.

In soccer terms, this game was a ``friendly'' with both camps happy to escape without injuries, although it was a good hitout in hot conditions.

The final score _ 10.12 (72) to 9.11 (65) _ reflected those conditions, but Magpies coach Mick Malthouse conceded he was not happy with kicking only nine goals.

"Nine goals, no, it's not good enough, but it's a practice match,'' he said.

"They kicked 10. If they kick eight and you kick nine, it is enough.''

Anthony Rocca, Josh Fraser and Travis Cloke occupied the key forward positions for most of yesterday's match, and of those Cloke was the best-performed _ and he could manage only two goals.

Rocca's goal came at the 10-minute mark of the last quarter, in the goalsquare, after a handball over the top of his opponent from Shane O'Bree. Richmond had a stand-out goalkicker in the enigmatic Nathan Brown, who showed he will be back to his best this season with four clever goals, and a hand in more.

The Tigers controlled most of the game but after keeping Collingwood goalless in the third term failed to capitalise on their dominance by wasting opportunities and kicking only 4.8 after halftime.

Coach Terry Wallace was pleased with the continued improvement of some of the Tigers' younger players who have been in the system for three years.

Foremost among those was Brett Deledio, who had 30 possessions, and ruckman Adam Pattison, who had 22 touches as well as 11 marks and 15 hitouts.
