Richo wants to play

Richardson eyes Bombers
Martin Boulton | May 26, 2007 | The Age

RICHMOND'S Matthew Richardson said he's "looking forward" to playing Essendon at the MCG tonight but medical advice still could rule out the injured Tiger, according to coach Terry Wallace.

The 32-year-old fractured his left eye socket in last weekend's match against Adelaide but was named in the Richmond squad for tonight's game.

Bruising still surrounds his eye a week after he was accidentally kicked by a teammate.

"When he knocked on my door on Monday morning to say he was at least keen (to play), he looked like a prize fighter from one of the Rocky movies," Wallace said.

Richardson completed yesterday's training session at the Punt Road Oval — his first for the week — but Wallace said a final decision on his availability would be based strictly on medical advice. "Matthew asked us whether we could leave it open for him until the completion of the week to see if he could come up (and) the only way we could do that was to select him in the side to give him every chance," Wallace said.

"He was never definitely going to play, he was probably more definitely not going to play for most of the week, (but) we thought, No. 1, for everything he's done for the club, you give him every opportunity to play … he's a key player for us and we wanted to do that.

"Also, from the point of view of the other players, to see one of your guys trying that hard with the type of injuries he's had, I thought it was a good message for some of our younger players."

He said Richardson was still "very, very keen" to play at the start of yesterday's session but the club's medical staff were "far more reserved" about his condition. "I think he got through the session all right but he certainly won't be playing without our medical staff saying he's right to play," Wallace said.

"He's come along very, very well and I've been absolutely amazed with his efforts, but that's what he's like, he's a heart-and-soul player for this footy club.

"If you ask Matthew, he'll be saying he wants to play and he's right to play, but he's got to get medical clearance to play."

Former Geelong forward Kent Kingsley and second-year player Matthew White were pulled out of a Coburg Tigers training session to train at Punt Road yesterday and Wallace said "Kent is obviously one" player who could replace Richardson.

He said Shane Tuck, who spent part of yesterday's session on the boundary line, would play.

Richardson wants to play

AS MUCH as Richmond forward Matthew Richardson wants to play tonight, and as much as coach Terry Wallace hoped he would, the final say will come from Tigers' medical staff.

Despite suffering a fractured eye socket last weekend, Richardson declared a willingness to play tonight against Essendon and showed his desire by training at Punt Rd Oval yesterday.

Having come through the 30-minute non-contact session without any obvious hitch, Richardson still needed a medical clearance to take his place in the Tigers forward line for the Dreamtime at the 'G game tonight.

"Absolutely 100 per cent he won't play unless he gets medical clearance," Wallace said after training.

"If you ask Matthew, he'll say he wants to play and he's right to play, but he's got to get medical clearance to play.

"I spoke to Matthew at the start of training and he was still very, very keen to play. I spoke to the medical staff and they were far more reserved in where he was at and how he was.

"I think he got through the session all right, so we'll step inside now and go through a process. But he certainly won't be playing without medical staff saying that he's right to play."

The area around Richardson's left eye was still bruised and discoloured yesterday, showing the external effects of the clash that sidelined him during the loss to Adelaide at AAMI Stadium.

It was initially feared he would miss at least a month, but the Tigers surprised everyone by naming Richardson on Thursday night, acceding to his request and the AFL rules that meant he needed to be named if he had any chance of playing.

"He was never definitely going to play," Wallace said. "He's probably been more definitely not going to play for most of the week.

"Matthew asked us early in the week if we could leave it open for him until the completion of the week to see if he had an opportunity of coming up. We thought for everything he's done for the club, you give him every opportunity to play.

"So we wanted to do that. Just from the point of view of the other players to see one of your guys trying that hard with the injury he's had, I thought it was a good message to some of the younger players."

If Richardson does not get medical clearance, he will probably be replaced by Kent Kingsley, who would make his Richmond debut after joining the club from Geelong in the off-season.

Matthew White is also on standby for the Tigers, who go looking for their first win of the season against Essendon.

Tigers likely to pull Richo

RICHMOND forward Matthew Richardson's brave bid to play with a fractured eye socket in his side's AFL match on Saturday night looks doomed to failure.

Richardson successfully completed training, but medical staff look set to err on the side of caution and not risk their forward spearhead against Essendon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Richardson received nasty facial injuries when accidentally caught by the boot of teammate Andrew Krakouer last weekend.

The Tigers surprisingly named Richardson in their side for the weekend, but Richmond coach Terry Wallace said club medical staff would decide his fate.

Heavy bruising was still evident on Richardson's face today, and the prospect of battling two of the league's toughest defenders in Dustin Fletcher and Mal Michael should be enough to sway the Tigers away from the obvious risks in playing him.

If Richo did play, I wouldn't put it pass Mal Michael to try and dust him up.

True Julz but you couldn't blame them. If Richo plays once he crsses that line he is open to it.

As I said earlier in the week fractured eyesockets are nasty. A family member had a severe fracture and it took about 6-8 weeks to get over it.

Granted Richo's is not a severe one because of where it actually is but the area is now weak and I would argue strongly that one knock to it and the damge could mean 6-8 weeks out. Question becomes what's best for 1/ Richo and 2/ the Club. I would think missing 1 week and letting the thing heal a bit is the best outcome for everyone

Funny, I saw a number 12 in the Y&B on the ground last night.
Richo was right in his thinking and you were wrong. Time to get a new source Jack?

A monkey would have known that, that was only 2 days after he copped Kraks stray boot, of course he wouldn't play then  ::)
But a week is a long time in footy  :lol
