Pinpointing where the rot started
Caroline Wilson | May 8, 2007
The Age

AS THE Richmond Football Club searches for answers and its shattered supporters search for meaning, it is worth examining not why it fell apart so savagely against Geelong at Telstra Dome but why not.

The Tigers did not capitulate because Terry Wallace waved the white flag on the season's eve. They did not give up because it was hoisted when Darren Gaspar was axed.

Certainly, the defender's career could not have ended more clumsily and the club should be embarrassed, but by all reports the one-time club champion's lack of intensity had become an issue and there was no meaningful player protest.

They did not fall apart because recruiting was left for too long in the hands of one man — one very busy man in Greg Miller, who came to the club as a saviour but has had to wear many hats, have many interests and play too many political games.

The team was not torn apart because its coach has been so busy selling the club — and close to 30,000 members would attest to that — that coaching at times was not the priority it should have been.

Nor were the Tigers flogged because they chose Richard Tambling over Lance Franklin, because they traded away early draft picks over the past five years and recycled too many players. It hasn't looked good for Richmond that David Rodan has become a regular in Port Adelaide's up-and-coming line-up.

While the off-field team probably never fully will be able to explain what happened on Sunday, it is worth pointing out that they are well aware of these issues and had been working to address them long before the on-field massacre.

Wallace might have blamed the media for misrepresenting his assessment of the list on the season's eve but he has been told that his timing was poor and his message ill-advised.

When a club has been in a winning position in four of its six games but loses all of them, surely lack of confidence plays a part. Suffice to say president Gary March fronted the media yesterday, while Wallace was advised to sell hope to his players and not the public. Save that for Tuesdays with Terry.

Miller virtually had control of the club under the last years of Clinton Casey's presidency. Casey's legacy was a redevelopment, some financial generosity and a $4 million debt. When there was no money to beef up the football department, the Tigers fell further behind.

Miller never truly accepted that the club had to take its medicine. The Tigers chased Dean Solomon, Robert Copeland and Trent Knobel and topped up with Mark Graham and Kent Kingsley.

When March replaced Casey, Miller's power-base eroded. The board took back the power of veto, insisting any contract longer than three years or worth more than a specified value had to be ratified by the directors. The football department was barred from trading first-round draft picks without board approval.

And now Miller's influence again will be reduced. His advice is considered crucial, his popularity unquestioned, but the club is searching for a new recruiting chief and is looking to restructure the football department. Again.

The club looks five years behind the competition. The question remains as to why the new era seems to be starting now, instead of 2½ years ago, when Wallace arrived.

But none of that explains what happened at Telstra Dome. Perhaps it was the loss the Tigers had to have. The club is no more certain of what happened that night than it is about the cause of Nathan Brown's pain and when he may return.

Incredible.

I would seriously consider offloading MOST if not ALL of the senior players at the end of the year. It isn't going to make any difference to the development of our kids. Simmonds is the only one we should think about keeping if he can at all recover from this ankle injury.

I would review all of the assistant coaching positions and off load anybody who has not played in or been apart of a premiership. You absolutley have to have people in these positions that the players of today respect. Luke Hodge showed the whole football world just how much respect he had for Jade Rawlings as a forward coach on the footy show some weeks back. He thought it was a joke. He's right, what's going on here, is this jobs for the boys. Get rid of him.

I would do absolutely everything in my power to gain the services of Michael Voss as an assistant coach of the midfield. OR mentor to the entire list.

I would play Danny Meyer for the rest of the year only to promote him enough that his exposure to potential clubs that might take himk in a trade and give us another high draft pick. Meyer is lazy it is abvious that he doesn't want to play for Richmond. We could try and trade him back to South Australia for a 1st or 2nd round pick, depending on how well he players for the remainder of the year.

Shultz is another one that I would trade as soon as possible, while he has got currency, he will NEVER play a full season of football, he will get injured at some point and will miss games. I'm convinced that injuries become contagious within a side it's almost like spreading the flu. Jack Reiwoldt is an up and comer and his cousin Nick might be someone we can jag in the psd if he leaves the Saints.

Mark coughlin (sp) has to go, he aint gunna make it back.

Lastly, we have to stop trying to be cute with our recruiting, STOP TRYING TO FIND THE DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH WHEN THE DIAMOND IS RIGHT THERE LOOKING AT YOU.

talking of the coaching department Brian Royal is a successful coach before comming to the AFL as a assistant coach
one day he will look for that senior coaching role & be offered it & l think he could do it well
King retired from football & came to us l truely think that is a bad idea on TW part the same with Crocker
My opinion and opinion only is if anybody is going to coach in any capacity in senior AFL ranks they must go back out to country or metro football clubs & start there coaching from that point not leave a club like the Kangaroos & come straight to Richmond in a capacity as a assistant coach surely King would still have his heart set at the Kangaroos but l dont know the guy or how good he is at his job l'm only using it as a example its the same as Cameron going from Richmond to Western Bulldogs

you know Paul Hudson would have been a good assistant coach at RFC he was doing some running for the club last year god knows why we bother with the Johnson clown from Carlton but l talked to Paul on the phone a bit & when we ran into each other & he has had some good success in coaching & getting the players up on the day & we let him get away to Brisbane Lions & hello who is doing well again this year there youngsters have lifted greatly & doing the tasks put to them
Paul also coached his sides into Grand Finals with success & defeat but he gets teams up there which is what every football club looks for
Why is it that we have contact with these type of people but never grasp there services & every other club ends up getting the benefits from them
so what is it with us we attract the losers or what ?? l mean really when l look at that Johnson guy from carlton running around with all that weight in front of him it really dont make the club look good in terms of fitness & health is the club really that desperate for runners who are not healthy looking

Agree. Recruiting is the most important aspect of a football club these days. We should aim to get/poach the best and put what limited resources we have behind him.

You might find that Paul Hudson got the chop from Plough due to the fact he gave away 2  50 metre penaltys in a game (Running inside the zone etc )

It all stemmed from a game at the game and Plough wouldnt let him run after half time. Plough gave him a spray walking down the race at half time and he didnt run in the second half.
That was the end of Huddo,
Also ask him did his partner get a job with him at Brisbane, she was a trainer at the tiges as well, good sort, easy on th eye ;)
