Walls and Shaw are idiots part II
« on: June 26, 2007, 11:00:06 PM »
The Age tomorrow are reviewing the official AFL team of the century which came out in 1996 to fit the likes of Hird, Carey and Voss in.

Shaw dropped Francis Bourke (5 time premiership player and 300 games) and Walls apparently Royce Hart (4 time premiership player and dual premiership captain). Surprise surprise Richmond legends got the flick ::).

I don't know why they have to meddle with it seeing as the team of the century was quite clearly chosen as a one of for the period 1897-1996.

Quite frankly it is disrespectful to some great players, Tigers or otherwise.

Does Shaw manage to squeeze Bucks in (to the team, that is)?

From: Are Hird, Voss and Carey in the best 22?

* the unanimous inclusion of Carey at centre half-forward at the expense of Richmond great Royce Hart

* Richmond great Francis Bourke is another to feel The Age selectors' axe. As good as the courageous Tiger was, he spent as much of his career in defence as he did on a wing.

Of course, Ablett, my choice for one wing ahead of Bourke, played plenty of other spots, too. The difference is he could still kick bags of goals from there, like the considerable share of the 14 he booted one memorable afternoon against Richmond in 1989. Even Carey, Coleman and co couldn't do some of the things "Gazza" did.

I was there that day Ablett kicked 14. I'm sure he played on a HFF all day, not the Wing.  ???

Removing Bourke and Hart is removing two players with 9 flags between who were in the bests in each one.

Royce starred at CHF from his very first game onwards. Kicked what 5 against the Bombers on debut. No coincidence Richmond's 24 year premiership and 20 year finals drought at the time broke in Hart's debut year.

St Francis dropped because he was so versatile he could star in more than one position during a 15 year long, 300 game career  ???. Ablett was a freak but kicking 8 from a wing against a wooden spoon side hardly compares to Bourke's deeds in finals from the wing and down back.

You know I could find a spot in the team for Carey - In the last 20 years best player I've seen

But at the expense of Hart - er know.....

Dustin Fletcher  ??? :gobdrop :gobdrop

Might as well put Shan McManus in there too  ::) ::)
