THE Murray Bushrangers have history on their side as they prepare to take on the Calder Cannons in today's TAC Cup grand final at the MCG.

Murray has defeated Calder in two of its past three hitouts and is enjoying an 11-game winning streak.

But the Cannons boast a strong line-up that includes three TAC Cup Team of the Year representatives.

Cannons coach David Flood expects Murray's All-Australian ruckman/forward Ben McEvoy to be a major threat to his side's chances of taking home the cup.

"He's a terrific young player and they've got some good, even spread through the midfield to back him up," Flood said.

"We know they are a very good side with a hard-running midfield."

Calder will also focus on shutting down livewire small forward Thomas Rockliff, who kicked eight goals when the Bushrangers won by 14 points in the second qualifying final three weeks ago.

The Cannons have recovered from the loss of star All-Australian forward Addam Maric, who hurt his shoulder last month, to make their sixth grand final in seven seasons.

They boast three TAC Cup Team of the Year members, Mitchell Farmer, James Polkinghorne and Ashley Arrowsmith. Their line-up also includes Darcy Daniher, son of Sydney and Essendon full-back Anthony, and Shaun McKernan, brother of North Melbourne great Corey.

Calder lost to Oakleigh in last year's TAC Cup grand final and last tasted premiership success in 2004.

The Bushrangers have not won a flag since 1998.

Cannons blast Bushies in TAC Cup decider
1:16 PM Sat 29 September, 2007
By Ben Broad

THE CALDER Cannons have won their fourth TAC Cup premiership in seven years after crushing the Murray Bushrangers by 50 points at the MCG.

The Cannons took control early in the match and ran away in the final term to win 14.20 (104) to 7.12 (54).

Calder enjoyed a greater number of attacking options and that, perhaps along with prior Grand Final experience, proved the difference in the end.

The Grand Final was Calder’s sixth in seven seasons, with several of last year’s line-up that lost to Oakleigh backing up in this year’s side.

Murray went into the match on the back of an 11-game winning streak – including a 14-point qualifying final win over the Cannons three weeks ago – but Calder got on top early and was able to maintain control.

Calder’s big guns all looked in sparkling touch early, with forward Darcy Daniher a commanding presence.

But the star of the first half was Cannon Ashley Arrowsmith, who was awarded the medal for best on ground.

He booted four goals in a midfield/forward role and it was his superb finishing that was the difference between the sides, as Calder enjoyed a 21-point lead at the main break.

Murray had the use of the breeze in the third term and needed to make the most of it, and when Samuel Wright booted his second things were looking up.

Bushrangers forward Thomas Rockliff, who booted three goals, loomed as a dangerous option for the country side, but Murray struggled to find ways to get the ball forward, and when it did the Bushies appeared rushed.

Calder maintained its lead at the final change – it was 22 points at the last break – and when Dylan Joyce snapped the first of the fourth quarter, the writing was on the wall.

Joyce again used his pace to advantage mid-way through the term to boot another, and from there on it was party-time for Calder as the Cannons fired their way to another flag.
