Yeah or Neah: 31. Chris Hyde
« on: September 06, 2007, 04:26:07 AM »
Chris Hyde is the next Tiger out of contract.

Hydey is in his 7th year at Punt Rd after being drafted in 2000 and redrafted in 2001. Debuted in 2002 but didn't cement a spot until Spud's final year when Chris played in all 22 games. Following 17 and 22 matches in 2005 and 2006 respectively, he played in 13 games this year averaging just under 15 disposals.

Does Hydey have a future at Punt Rd or will we trade him?

Keep.
Chris Hyde can play footy.

A lot of people have been critical of his lack of awareness this year, and yes, he has been run down too many times. To defend him on that, he has been given the ball too many times when there has been someone right on his hammer. I don't think it's fair to punish a player who is prepared to run hard, make himself an option, but then when a player like a Raines passes to him when he's hot, it makes it look like Hyde's fault when in fact he was the only one running hard to present himself. Harsh treatment for mine.
Some say he has never been the same since his serious head injury, I agree somewhat, but he has got something that we haven't had at Richmond for a while; he has got the ability to dodge a couple of opponents and slot it through the big sticks. He has had (i think) two bags of 4 in his career. I think he should be encouraged to stay hungry around the HFF.
Another plus is that he is super fit, he'll run all day given the opportunity.
Experience is a good school. But the fees are high.

In the long run we need to be aiming for a better standard than Chris Hyde, but short term there are others that should go first so keep for another season.

I'm thinking this way as well.

The first part of your reply jezza is why I think Hyde is at risk of being traded. At 25 years old and after 7 years in the system what you see now is what you'll get. IMO we'll test the waters in terms of involving him in a trade. He'd be a useful top up player for another club.

Brian Royal's RFC player review

Chris Hyde

Chris basically had an up and down year between AFL and VFL football and didn’t play the consistent footy he has in the past. He played 13 games this year compared to 22 last year. I think he would be disappointed with his 2007 season.
