Rookies
« on: November 20, 2007, 08:46:21 AM »
I had my cousin over last night and he said a friend of ours would start training with Richmond on Sunday.

He said there'd be around 20 or so, all vying for the 4 rookie spots in December.

This guy plays for Maffra, his name is Daniel Stubbe, nicknamed Digger. He is originally from Heyfield (a successful breeding ground for AFL footballers recently).

I think he won the Sale City B&F one year, only playing half a year before transferring to Maffra.

He is 6' 2", can jump like a mutherf**ker and has hands like a vice. He is already quite a solid boy, and very athletic, top basketballer as well. He is about 21 years old.

EDIT: Just checked, he is player 114142 in the draft listing

Sunday would be the rookie day they have every year.

They pick out who they want to come and train until the pre-season draft

Good luck to the kid

Good luck to him wayne.

As WP said Miller organizes this for the day after the National draft each year. We have 4 rookie spots available so it's a good initiative by Greg.

No of course not, Daniel Stubbe and I are completely different players, i'm 6'5", run 20m in 1.4 secs, my signature is the off balance 90m snap from the boundary for goal and I can hold 57 chook eggs in each hand, but this is not about me Richmond scouts (if you're reading), it's about Daniel.  :lol

good to see the list of players still available....i'd say with us having taken Putt already and with plenty of young rucks still available..we should kiss guy richards goodbye...no need for him anymore...
Wishlist:
PSD no.1: Gourdis (supreme athlete and well built...perhaps an attitude prob lead to his demise...since we did take connors last year..i'd say we take ac chance on gourdis)
Rookie draft: Bellchambers or Sullivan (good to rookie to developing ruck..both previously highly rated)
Pfeiffer (training with us...may as well pick him up)
Cruize Gartlett (small forward from WA to play the forward pocket role providing forward pressure) or one of the small forwards from Coburg
Luke casey-leigh (perhaps...has the connection and is a big defender who had decent results at state screening)

that in my opinion would be a good result on top of adding Cotchin, Rance and Putt  :thumbsup

Ryan Normington  22 Aug 89  186 76 (VC)
Luke Potts             25 Feb 89  177 68  (VM)
Plus Wes Lammie who's another ruckman are a couple more. Plenty of good rookie options still available. Hardly any kids came out of SA this year (Ebert and McNamara the only ones I think) so maybe a few of them might be a show.

Gourdis will be picked up as a rookie by someone. Nothing to lose for any club as rookies can be cut after just one year without needing to pay them out unlike a National draftee.

As for us do we stick with knowns like Silvester, Pfeiffer and Howat as 3 of our 4 rookies or do we go mostly with youngsters who missed out today.

Some comments on potential ruckman in the rookie draft from BB

Will Sullivan - (training with Richmond)

DOB: 24/8/89; Hgt: 202cm; Wgt: 95kg; Club: Western Jets (Vic Metro)

Strengths:
*Very good tap works – hits teammates
*Good leap and timing in the ruck
*Around the ground work is okay
*Marking is good

Concerns:
*Kicking is okay not good so needs to be worked with
*Not quick at all.

Comment:
Sullivan is a very good tap ruckman – both his tap work and timing of his leap has helped him a lot in this area. If he works on his around the ground play and kicking he could become a very good player.

Andrew Renton

DOB: 29/3/89; Hgt: 202cm; Wgt: 94kg; Club: Eastern Rangers (Vic Metro)

Comment:
One of the “taller” rucks out of the under 18’s. He gets first hands to the ball a lot of the time and his palming down is good. He is a good kick of the footy. Renton has to get around the ground more and lift hi work rate a bit. Renton seems like a true ruck option which will appeal to clubs. His marking in the forward line is more than handy.

Tom Bellchambers

DOB: 9/7/89; Hgt: 201cm; Wgt: 100kg; Club: Northern Bombers (Tas)

Strengths:
*Tap work in the ruck is excellent
*Has a good tank
*Good mark
*Skills are okay for a ruck

Concerns:
*Needs to improve work around the ground

Comment:
Bellchambers tap work is great however clubs would want him to improve his work around the ground. Tom Bellchambers is likened to Darren Jolly.

Emma Quayle needs to learn the rules.  :shh

Steven Gaertner does not qualify for the PSD or rookie draft because he was born after dec 31 1989.

The same guy who did the phantom PSD has also done a mock Rookie Draft with short summaries of possible rookie pick-ups.

http://www.magpies.net/nick/bb/viewtopic.php?t=40775

1 Richmond – Darren Pfeiffer (Adelaide)

Not sure if it will be here or later but expect the talented Pfieffer to be at Tigerland. Was a little surprised the Tiges moved him on and had been hoping to get the message he was training at Lexus but alas! HB / mid type who moves really well and uses the ball very well. Something went wrong at AAMI and reportedly it was his behaviour. Lets hope he turns it around.

17 Richmond – .Clayton Collard (Fremantle)

A highly talented lad from the super draft of last year. Not exactly sure why this bloke fell out but odd IMO. He has something special and it just needs to be harnessed. The discipline of Tigerland? Will it be enough though??

32 Richmond – Trent Denis Lane (Subiaco / 178cm / 79kg)

Well….any kid who can walk into Colts and kick 60 goals in 11 games must be a moral certainty for a rookie spot. I did not have him in my mock national draft but plenty did and quite justifiably. Pacy and really good foot skills. Reads play extremely well and any club looking for that crumbing forward would be looking at him.

44 Richmond – Ryan.Hobbs (North Ballarat / 194 / 89)

Versatile CHF or CHB type who gets around the ground pretty well. Skills are good and takes a good contested mark. Pace would be a bit of a question given the demands of the modern day CHF

It'd be a surprise if we rookie draft someone who hasn't been down training with us. Just got a feeling Callinan (as a mature rookie) and Silvester are still in the mix and another young ruckman should be on the menu too.

I think your right -  Collard, Pfeffier and Silvester would be my guess if they haven't been picked up in the PSD by that stage.
