THE 18-possession performance of defender Kelvin Moore was a positive for Richmond fans out of Friday night’s loss to St Kilda with his towering grab in the third quarter providing an exclamation point to the promising display.
The fifth-year backman soared over young Saint Jarryd Allen in the third quarter and managed to pull down a screamer that had everyone at the ground on their feet.
“I haven’t taken a mark like that for a while,” Moore said with a grin after the match.
“I had a perfect sit for it so I had to go for it. Your eyes light up and you think ‘Hang on, I can either spoil or I can go for a big mark here’. I chose to go for the big mark and luckily enough I held on to it.
“When you’re up there, you’ve just got your eyes on the ball and hope that you hold onto it because it can be pretty embarrassing if you drop it and they go down the other end and kick a goal.
“I would rather have won the game than have taken a big mark, but life goes on.”
Moore, 23, admitted he “might have a bit of a peek” at a replay when he got home from the match, but his mark won’t be the only thing to bring a smile to his face. After 24 games in four years at the club, Moore is confident his performance can provide a solid platform for the coming season.
“It was good, I had been playing alright coming into this game and you train so hard over the pre-season, so it’s good to actually get out there and have a bit of a hitout and practice the things that you’ve done over the five months that you’ve been training,” he said.
“You do all these little steps during the pre-season, you work on your positioning in the backline and you do a fair bit of work with the coaches.
“My goal is to just try and put all of that stuff into place and try to get it worked out week-in, week-out and keep my spot in that back line and hopefully we can all work well together.”
