Dreamtime game 'up there with Anzac Day'
May 21, 2008 - 1:45PM

Richmond coach Terry Wallace said the thrilling nature of the contests over the past two seasons had helped stamp the fixture as an important part of the AFL calendar.

"To see the crowds that have been here over the last couple of years and the way the game's grown, both the pre-match (entertainment) and then the game itself, I think it's very similar to the Anzac game," Wallace said.

"It's played in a fantastic spirit, over the past two years in particular since they've been the Saturday night games.

"Both those games finished with only 10 points (total) between the two clubs on the two occasions, with one win to Essendon last year and us winning by a couple of points the year before.

"So very, very similar to Anzac Day, it doesn't matter where the two sides are on the ladder, I think the understanding of what the game's about and how it's grown is not lost to the two clubs."

Aboriginal Tigers midfielder Richard Tambling said it was a proud moment representing the nation's indigenous people.

"It's sort of something that we call our own and there's not many things out there that the indigenous people can say it belongs to them," Tambling said.

"Just to run out onto the field on Saturday night just to put on a show will be amazing."

Wallace: Time for Tigers to stand up

Wallace: Time for Tigers to stand up

In the last month, the Tigers have lost to the top two teams, drawn with the third, and lost to the Saints, who were widely tipped pre-season to finish in the top two.

Wallace said the team simply had to keep doing the things that would make it successful in the long-term.

"We believe that we've been playing much better football in the last month or so than what we have probably in my time at the club.

"We haven't actually got the results as in four points on the board from some of those efforts, but in the last month we've played against three of the four undefeated sides in the competition and ran them fairly strong, so we believe our form can stand up.

"We understand that we're growing and developing as a team, and we also understand that we've played against the best sides in the competition.

"I think that what we've tried to be strong on is if we continue to do what we've been doing, eventually results will come our way.

"That mightn't mean that at this point in time we are in the top four sides in the AFL, but I think it shows that we're an improving squad, and probably over the next six to eight weeks we've got to show that to ourselves.

"But we know and understand each week you go out there you've got another opposition, and an opposition that's very keen to win as well."

I don't think there's any need to be 'nice' about it.

Someone on bigfooty reckons that Rance is a small chance this week because Essendon we are so crap we can take risks. In that event I expect Jimmy Boogie to make his long awaited debut this week.
