Wasteful
« on: June 28, 2008, 04:53:32 PM »
Another opportunity goes begging, our inability to make the most of goals scoring chances comes back to bite us. Great effort by Morton and Hughes but we still dont have a dangerous small forward, unfortunately after todays performance i wouldnt put Nathan Brown in the category of "dangerous" when he finishes with 0.7. Unfortunately the running game plan we played meant we would tire after last weeks interstate trip as we ended up doing so it was paramount we took our early opportunities.

We also are in some dire need of some speed in the forwards in order to keep the ball inside 50, too many times today once the ball went to ground their defence cleared with too much ease. I think we either have to promote Collard for next year or recruit a quick small forward.

In one way i was glad we lost today as we would have been pretenders if we had gone on to make the eight. At least we know where we are as a team, still a long way to go but with a some good further trade choices we could be much stronger next year.

It is not so much the wastefulness. Browny at least got the ball. What I find detrimental by Browny is he cannot take a mark above his head and can only seem to mark out in front or on his chest. Furthermore Browny tries to make a simple thing difficult. Could have had 3.1 in the first quarter and if that equates to 5.4 to 1.5 first quarter then that might be a different end result.
Small forwards in Morton presented well and did well with the opportunities as did Clever.
It all boils down to skills. Under pressure we lacked the poise and run especially in the second half and they revert back to the chip chip type of play. Our hard ball gets also let us down today. It seemed Carlton in their planning had resigned themselves to the fact that Simmo would win the majority of ruck work and hence planned accordingly by placing Carlton blokes in the areas where Simmo was more than likely to hit it out.
A few moves in the second half left alot to be desired and since Thursfield was not present then promote a tall. Instead King got the nod and Newman started on Betts. Would it not be more beneficial to play Schulz or Rance? How many talls did they have in the forward line in the last quarter. Wiggins Fevola Fisher Kruezer at one stage I saw King going with Fisher. Perhaps its time to promote Rance against W Coast in a fortnight when we go to WA.
Enough of the game we lost lamentably and thats another big game against the Scum that we found a way to lose in my lifetime 82 Grannie 83 Night Grannie and now our centennary. I feel gutted hollow and empty. As the club said if its one game we all went to it had to be this one and as fans our plea to the Club/Team was if it was one game we had to win for the year it would be this one. Right now would trade the round 1 win for a win today. Something the Blues now have over us and the Pies. It seems to me that from a fans perspective the real waste was the fact that we lost and all events during the game and all the ceremonies and such as nice and wonderful as they are have now been neutralised slightly and feel a little hollow as we could not put it together on the ground and in the coaches box today when it counted most. For me currently that is the greatest waste and the biggest slur on our footy club who still have to learn to win these types of games before we earn respect and become a more competitive and feared side. Another wasted big game. Shattered.

I lost count of Browny's points  :banghead. Geez he has a 3-hour brain fade today. Even he switched to his right foot at one stage because the left one wasn't working. Made no difference of course. What was worse was when he played on in the last quarter after taking the mark and turned over the ball so easily and stupidly. Hard to find any leaders today and as a senior experienced player Browny flunked. You're right HT74 about Browny not being a contested 1-on-1 forward. He's not a player you plonk the ball on his head and expect him to mark it.

If you don't put it on the scoreboard when you're on top it comes back to bite you. The last few weeks we've been able to have bursts and kick lots of goals in a short periods to get us across the line. Today it was points and we got run over in the end. Poor goalkicking is my pet hate so I'm ticked off.

Can anyone tell me why on gods green earth, in the last quater when we were getting smashed out of the centre, did we have Browny standing in the goalsquare doing squat.  Especially after his performance in front of goals today. wouldnt it have been better to have him in the centre and possibly Jack up fwd.
Dont get me wrong im no coach but some of the changes to the team and the resulting match ups seemed ludicrous, IE Kingy i dont think he is up to standard, his kicking and decision making is poor for a AFL player.

On a possitive note id give the points to Kel over Fev today he held him pretty well for 3/4 of the game it was only the last when the ball just kept on comming in thick and fast thank Fev started winning the contest.
Also Cotchin, what a star this boy is going to be.  eveytime he touched the ball it resulted in a positive.
