Coburg lined up at ABD Group Stadium on Saturday on a cold but dry day in front of their home fans, but unfortunately there wasn’t much to celebrate.
In a one sided contest the boys suffered their heaviest defeat of the year, as Port Melbourne came out flying and had the game sewn up by half time. The Burger boys kept up the fight right until the final siren, but Port were simply too good on the day.
The Borough kicked with the wind in the first term, and capitalised on it with fourteen scoring shots to Coburg’s two. The Coburg defenders were under pressure all day. Daniel Meyer, James Keogh and Jarrod Silvester, although beaten on occasions, were Coburg’s better players in the backline. With the consistency of forward line entries from Port, the boys did well to keep their opposition from reaching the twenty goal mark.
¼ Time: Coburg 1.1 (7) Port Melbourne 6.8 (44)Christian McErlain played his best game for the season. He found a lot of the ball in the backline and used his possessions thoughtfully. This was one of the rare positives to take out of the game for the Burgers. Although the backline held up fairly well in the second term keeping the Borough to three goals, the Burger forwards could only manage another two, going into the main break forty one points in arrear.
½ Time: Coburg 3.6 (24) Port Melbourne 9.11 (65)Coburg didn’t have a pivotal forward as they had done all season. Burgers players including Jack Riewoldt, Cleve Hughes, Mitch Morton, Jay Schultz, Joel Bowden and Kelvin Moore all lined up for Richmond this weekend. All have played telling forward line roles for the Burgers this year, and the boys struggled without a bigman to kick too. Fort Caruso crumbed a couple of classy goals to be Coburg’s leading goal kicker with two majors.
¾ Time: Coburg 4.7 (31) Port Melbourne 14.18 (102)The boys managed to double their number of goals for the match in the final term, but Port also helped themselves to another five, to run away with a seventy five point win, Coburg’s worst loss for the season. Chris Hyde and Nick Carnell were tireless workers in the midfield and collected plenty of the ball, but they didn’t have enough mates helping them out. Dean Putt, Richmond 2007 draft pick, gave his all in the ruck and also snuck forward to snag a goal.
The Burgers will look to redeem themselves this week as they face Williamstown on Sunday at Burbank Oval starting at 2pm.
