A snippet of Wallace from SEN:

* Some commentators comments on what Joel did have gone too far. Comparing what he did to the Trevor Chappell incident was over the top. Not just one journo either. There's been a few over the past couple of days. The Chappell incident was something where the captain told one of his players to do something that had never been done in the history of cricket. Terry did agree though that the AFL will look at it.

Terry Wallace defends Bowden's actions
Herald-Sun | July 22, 2008 12:58pm

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace has backed Joel Bowden's decision to ice the clock by deliberately rushing behinds.

In the final minute of the Tigers' four-point win over Essendon on Saturday, Bowden conceded a behind to take time off the clock.

This move caused uproar among Bombers fans, and prompted calls ffor the AFL to look into changing the rule for rushed behinds.

But today Bowden's coach threw his support behind his player, saying the Tigers were not in a position on that ladder that gave them the luxury to think about not winning.

Wallace said he was disappointed in some of the criticism of Bowden, in particular Mike Sheahan's comparison with Trevor Chappell's underarm delivery, considering teams so often rushed behinds during a game.

Wallace confirmed that Tigers star Matthew Richardson would return from a hamstring injury this weekend for the match against the Lions.

Forward Graham Polak, who has been in hospital for several weeks since being hit by a tram, went home for the first time on the weekend to watch the game, Wallace said.

A bit more of Terry from SEN:

* Plough said he had breathing difficulties Thursday and Friday nights. Pretty uncomfortable to say the least but we got through on the Saturday. He said he actually felt worse during the Freo game with the usual fever symptoms than he did on Saturday.

* Back on Joel - You'll do whatever you do within the rules to avoid certain situations. We're not in a position to give up games of footy.

* Wallace said he felt for Petts but he wouldn't speculate on whether Petts contract would be renewed or not.

But wait there's more from SEN lol.....

* Plough said he's still on tablets for another fortnight. He had Asthma-like symptoms but it wasn't Asthma. By the Thursday/Friday he was eating right and had his faculties. It was just the breathing problems so the main concerns was getting out to the ground to talk to the boys and dealing with the 97 steps to and from the coaches' box.

* Told the boys afterwards he was glad he didn't have a heart complaint given the closeness of the game. We did have a 6 day break which was more like a 5 1/2 day break given we didn't get back to 2am and some of the boys didn't get to sleep until 3.30am. Essendon had their problems too but Wallace said he was pleased that we could respond back late in the game given the short break.

* Review process involves telling the boys not to take risks you don't have to. We've done rushed behinds before during games rather than at the end. Newy has rushed a point before. Jack King has also. It was said this morning that Jake's could have cost us the win. Well if Jake kicked it with no options available it could have cost us a goal instead of a point.

* We had blokes off our feet (so did Essendon) so no point pulling the trigger if there's no options being given by those upfield. Joel went to Jordie as he was free.

Wallace aims for future finals campaigns
July 22, 2008 - 3:05PM

Richmond coach Terry Wallace says the Tigers can still have a say in whether they play in the AFL finals in 2008, but his main concern is keeping the club in the top half.

The Tigers must beat the Brisbane Lions on Saturday night to stay in the hunt to play this September, but Wallace on Tuesday said he was focused on getting the club into a position where it could string finals campaigns together.

The Tigers have played in only three finals series since they won the 1980 premiership, but have not strung consecutive campaigns together since they did so from 1971-75.

"That's always been our aim, when we get there is that we've got the ability to stay there," Wallace said.

"Whether that's getting there this year or getting there next year, whenever that may be, but it has to be based on something that is sustainable. That's all we've ever cared about."

Richmond are currently 10th, one game outside the eight, and a chance to reach their first finals campaign since 2001.

"We've still got our own destiny in our own hands and that's how you want to be in a season," said Wallace.

"It's much more pleasant for the playing group, coaching group and more particularly your supporter base to be going along to games to be at least dreaming and be excited coming into those games of footy, where we weren't in that situation last year.

"Our first aim is to get back to 50-50 footy and if we can get a win on the weekend then all of a sudden we get our season back to eight (wins), eight (losses) and a draw, so at least we're back to square one."

Wallace expected star Matthew Richardson to return to play the Lions after missing two games with a hamstring strain.

Tigers shrug off a cold and look to finals
Michael Gleeson | July 23, 2008

RICHMOND, like its coach, has emerged from the funk of winter's grip lurching with a cough and a wheeze to find itself, as if by surprise, on the brink of good health.

The asthmatic-like choke that halted Terry Wallace has subsided to regular man-flu, Matthew Richardson's ageing hamstring has knitted once more, such that he will be back in the side this week, and most importantly Graham Polak felt sufficiently improved to return home for a few hours on Saturday to watch the win over Essendon.

The win has vaulted the Tigers to a game from the eight and retaining the capacity to command their own fortune for the remainder of the season. "What I have got now is what most of Melbourne has got, which is a chest infection and I am still coughing and I am still on tablets for another fortnight, but what I was dealing with last week was far worse," Wallace said of his own illness, which last week had him in hospital and on a respirator and almost unable to coach the side.

"I was really struggling for breath … It was pretty uncomfortable for the week."

Wallace got through the game missing only the post-match press conference, a task that he relinquished in the event of the win, but would have performed had the Tigers lost.

But the four-point win in anxious circumstances had him pleased it was a respiratory, not cardiac, issue he was battling.

Wallace was philosophical about the scenario that confronts the Tigers, a game from the eight and like any side ever keen to play finals, but more mindful of the distance that needs to be covered for finals than basking in the glory of the distance already passed from the misery of wooden spoons.

"We've still got our own destiny in our own hands and that's how you want to be in a season," said Wallace.

"It's much more pleasant for the playing group, coaching group and more particularly your supporter base to be going along to games to be at least able to dream and be excited about coming into those games of footy, where we weren't in that situation last year.

"Our first aim is to get back to 50-50 footy and if we can get a win on the weekend then all of a sudden we get our season back to eight (wins), eight (losses) and a draw, so at least we're back to square one."

The return of Richardson will advance the cause for a finals place in confronting another contention side, Brisbane Lions, this weekend.

Mark Coughlan, an almost forgotten man of football, is edging closer to a return, having played a couple of VFL games after the hamstring problems that followed the knee reconstruction.

Kayne Pettifer, meanwhile, is embarking on his knee rehabilitation after a reconstruction this week. The club hopes he will be fit in time for round one next year, wherever that may be. Pettifer is out of contract at season's end and Wallace has promised to advise him soon of the club's intentions for next year.

The improving outlook for the club — not harmed by the Federal Government's announcement of a $6.75 million cash injection at the weekend — has arrived punctually according to Wallace, even if some had mis-read the club's plight previously and expected too much too soon.

"Others have thought we had lost our way, but sometimes people don't understand how your list shapes up and how long things take," he said. "You go back a long, long way before (Richmond) played in multiple finals series and that's always been our aim, when we get there that we've got the ability to stay there.

"Whether that's getting there this year or getting there next year, whenever that may be, but it has to be based on something that is sustainable. That's all we've ever cared about." Finals and good health.
