RICHMOND has beaten Fremantle by three points in a thrilling NAB Cup match at Subiaco Oval on Sunday, inspired by evergreen champion Matthew Richardson.

Richmond found itself down 28 points early in the first quarter and still behind by 23 at half time, but a five-goal to nil third quarter and first two goals of the last put the Tigers up by 16 points.

However, Fremantle hit back once again to lead by nine points 16 minutes into the last term before Richardson's second had the margin back under a kick. He then sealed the game with his third and a mark in defence on Fremantle's last foray forward.

Richardson, who turns 34 in March, is coming off one of the best seasons of his decorated career in 2008 finishing third in the Brownlow Medal in a new role further up the ground.

It worked a treat once coach Terry Wallace tried it at Subiaco Oval against Fremantle in round 4, and on return he was brilliant again.

Spending most of the night on the wing before moving forward for the last quarter, Richardson dominated with 25 possessions, nine marks, a super goal and two regulation goals.

Mitch Morton and Nathan Brown also kicked three goals each, Jack Riewoldt two and 21 possessions, with Nathan Foley racking up 33 possessions, Brett Deledio 29, Daniel Jackson 29, Andrew Raines 27 and Shane Tuck 24.

Ben Cousins and Adam Thomson didn’t play and will have to wait at least another fortnight to turn out for a first game in Tigers colours, while Trent Cotchin, Mark Coughlan, Kane Johnson, Jake King, Will Thursfield, Jordan McMahon and Adam Pattison were also missing.

Fremantle got the jump on the Tigers with the first three goals of the game before Riewoldt nailed the Tigers first goal at the 15-minute mark and Richardson kicked a nine-pointer soon after.

Brown then kicked the first two goals of the second to bring Richmond within touch, but Fremantle kicked the last two goals to take a 23-point lead into the main break.

Riewoldt kicked his second goal to start the third quarter after taking a gutsy mark in the goal square that brought the Tigers within 17.

Shane Edwards then set up Morton with tremendous vision and he was able to kick truly to make the margin just 12. Brown then crumbed beautifully from a Richardson marking attempt to kick his third goal and the Tigers were on a roll early in the third term.

Rookie-listed player Robin Nahas, who came in as a replacement for Thursfield, then snapped truly from 15 metres with his first kick to make his mark on the contest and to bring the scores level at 56.

Morton marked and snapped truly near three quarter-time to put Richmond in front for the first time in the match, where they stayed at the last break to the tune of three points.

Morton's third when he snapped on his left boot was the first goal of the final quarter and the Tigers had the last six goals of the game to be up by 11 points.

Richmond's dominance when Cleve Hughes marked and goaled to put his team up by 16 points, but then a goal to Kepler Bradley and super goals to Stephen Hill and Garrick Ibbotson suddenly saw Fremantle lead by nine again.

Richardson's dribbled snap went through to make the margin three points and in the dying seconds, Morton found himself in plenty of space inside 50. Riewoldt managed to get it to him, he handballed over to Richardson who ran into an open goal to seal the win.

Richmond will now face Collingwood in a fortnight's time in the next round of the NAB Cup.

MATTHEW Richardson put in a Herculean effort to lift Richmond to a pulsating three-point NAB Cup victory over Fremantle at Subiaco Oval on Sunday.

The Tigers trailed by nine points at the 18-minute mark of the final quarter but Richardson kicked the final two goals of the match to lift Richmond to the 1.12.8 (89) to 5.5.11 (86) triumph.

Richardson finished the match with 25 disposals, nine marks and three goals, with his scintillating start to the third quarter lifting the Tigers back into the contest after the Dockers had opened up a 23-point lead at halftime.

Richmond's win sets up a quarter-final showdown against Collingwood in a fortnight, while Fremantle will play the loser of Friday's North Melbourne/Carlton clash on February 28 at Manuka Oval.

Mitch Morton (three goals), Nathan Brown (three goals) and Jack Riewoldt (two goals) proved a handful around goal, while Nathan Foley (33 possessions) and Daniel Jackson (29 possessions) were prominent throughout.

Richardson, who gathered 25 possessions and booted four goals in Richmond's 64-point flogging of Fremantle in round four last year, once again proved to be the Dockers' nemesis.

The 276-game veteran was everywhere as Richmond kicked seven unanswered goals after halftime to take control of the match.

But with the Tigers seemingly in cruise control, a Kepler Bradley goal followed quickly by nine-pointers to Stephen Hill and Garrick Ibbotson turned the game back in Fremantle's favour in the last quarter.

Step up Richardson.

The wingman/defender/forward lifted once again when the game was there to be won, booting the final two goals of the match and taking a crucial mark in defence to seal the win.

Rhys Palmer (21 possessions) was influential for the Dockers, while Andrew Browne, Stephen Hill and Paul Hasleby worked hard for the home side.

The Tigers over-possessed the ball in the first half but reaped the rewards when they reverted to a more direct route in the second.

Fremantle made a flying start to the contest, with super goals to Dean Solomon and Andrew Browne lifting the home side to a 31-3 lead after just 13 minutes.

The Tigers dominated possession but were wasteful with their disposals as the Dockers' long and direct route proved a winner.

Richardson's tireless work around the ground inspired the Tigers into action, with the 33-year-old's super goal helping to close the margin to 18 at the first break.

Two quick goals to Brown at the start of the second quarter saw Richmond close to within eight points but a 50m penalty against Jay Schulz, which led to a Byron Schammer nine-pointer, gave the Dockers some breathing space.

Richmond coach Terry Wallace admitted his team's intensity wasn't up to scratch in the first half.

"Early on the home side wanted the ball more and were probably a bit more ferocious at winning it first up,'' Wallace said.

"They were beating us in the clearances early and I thought their tackling intensity was better than ours early in the game.

"It was a good hit-out. I think for both sides going into the season proper, you don't usually get that type of game at that capacity right through ... the four quarters.''

Mark Harvey said he was pleased with the effort of his team, which featured seven first-gamers.

"It was interesting to see the mix and the balance we played with tonight,'' Harvey said.

"They gave it their all in their first game and they just fell away at crucial times.

"Our tackle count was really good and a couple of our highest tacklers on the night were our younger players. They're the sorts of signs you look for,'' he said.

RICHMOND coach Terry Wallace last night unveiled his version of Hawthorn's rolling zone in a three-point win over Fremantle.

The Tigers survived a Docker deluge of nine-pointers as evergreen Matthew Richardson starred, kicking the matchwinning goal and then taking the match-saving mark.

In a spirited beginning to the Ben Cousins era at Tigerland, Wallace's pedantic defensive zones were further evidence of how the Hawks' premiership win is set to revolutionise tactics this season.

With Cousins watching from the sideline at his old home ground, Richmond's senior players stood up as the Tigers stormed back from 23 points down at halftime.

Richardson (three goals and 25 disposals) and new vice-captain Nathan Foley (33 touches) were outstanding, while Nathan Brown and Mitch Morton kicked three goals apiece in livewire roles.

Young forward Jack Riewoldt also impressed with two goals and some strong marking before hobbling off in the last quarter with a knock to the leg.

Richmond rookie Robin Nahas snapped a sensational roving goal with his first kick to level the scores in the third term.

The Tigers' win sets up a NAB Cup quarter-final clash with Collingwood in a fortnight, which could become Cousins' blockbuster return.

Freo plays the loser of next week's Carlton-North Melbourne clash at Manuka Oval in Canberra on February 28.

The Tigers employed six players marking space in the defensive half of the centre square to lock the ball in as they attacked inside the 50m arc and when Fremantle was kicking in from behinds.

With good discipline, they ran to points on the ground and were content to let Fremantle flood back.

Richmond employed an 18-man zone at Dockers' kick-ins, stretching to half-back.

But concentration on the new defensive method appeared to rob players of instinct at times, and the Dockers found a way to punch through the strategy early, with a combination of hard running and accurate disposal setting up an 18-point lead at quarter-time.

Former West Coast defender Glen Jakovich said the zone fad would place a premium on foot skills this season.

"The way Fremantle was able to combat it was to hit the target," Jakovich said.

Richardson started on a wing before being thrown forward, and kicked a nine-pointer in the opening term.

The 33-year-old also worked deep into defence in a sign he is again set for the roaming role that almost won him the Brownlow Medal last season.

The Tigers went in with an experienced line-up, despite the absence of Cousins and former captain Kane Johnson from what has the potential to be a formidable midfield.

Returns from injured pair Trent Cotchin and Mark Coughlan would further strengthen the onball division.

The Dockers were without skipper Matthew Pavlich, as well as Chris Tarrant and Des Headland.

Fremantle's No. 3 draft pick Stephen Hill looked at home at AFL level despite his light frame, and kicked a sensational nine-pointer in the final quarter. Midfielder Paul Hasleby made a quiet but successful return after a year out with a knee reconstruction.
