Past Draft Camps
« on: October 06, 2006, 09:59:21 PM »
I thought I'd post some past draft camp results and articles that can now be looked back on.

The first is from the 2001 superdraft. The only  ::) youngster we drafted that year was Rodan at pick 33.

Courtesy of AFL.com.au

Small Midfielders

1. STEVEN ARMSTRONG (Perth) – Had an impressive camp producing fine results in the running vertical jump, 20m sprint, agility and shuttle run. Is likely to be taken as a 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice. A strong running midfielder for his size.

2. CAMPBELL BROWN (Oakleigh) – Son of legendary football figure Mal. Showed strong competitiveness at the camp and recorded good results in the 20m sprint. A strong tackler who can play in the midfield or down back.

3. ANDREW BROWNE (Claremont) – Determined small midfielder who showed great pace, clean hands and endurance during the skills session at Phillip. Has fine goal sense and is also a strong leader.

4. DANIEL ELSTONE (Bendigo Pioneers) – Elstone showed a strong work ethic at the camp and produced consistent results, particularly in the running vertical jump and shuttle run tests.

5. SHANE HARVEY (Northern Knights) – Showed fine skills in the wet at the training session held at Phillip. Very similar type to his brother Brent of the Kangaroos. Good front and square at the ball. Could go as early as a 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice.

6. ADAM JONES (Subiaco) – Was hindered by osteitis pubis during the camp and was unable to run.

7. RICK LADSON (Bendigo Pioneers) – Is touted as a likely 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice, Ladson showed clean hands and a touch of class in the skills session. He produced excellent results in the shuttle run and also showed good agility. The tallest player of the small midfielders group.

8. LEIGH MONTAGNA (Northern Knights) – Was restricted at the camp due to a recent medial ligament strain on his right knee. Was unable to compete in running drills.

9. DAVID RODAN (Calder Cannons) – Arguably the stand out performer at the 2001 Draft Camp. Rodan, a back-to-back Morrish Medallist, blitzed in the Shuttle Run (beep test) and the 3km-time trial. Has an excellent character and did everything in his power to say ‘pick me’. Would be a tragedy if he missed out, as his only question mark is his height (170cm).

10. ASHLEY SAMPI (South Fremantle) – Rated by many as a definite Top 10 pick, Sampi should be selected in the Top 5-6. To watch Sampi’s skills in the wet was a delight, as he added great ball handling with a touch of class. Recorded a fine score of 2.92 in the 20m sprint test and has a fine character to match.

11. ADAM SCHNEIDER (NSW/ACT Rams) – Was unable to complete the running drills due to re-injuring his calf in the vertical jump test.

Medium Midfielders

12. LUKE BALL (Sandringham Dragons) – Is touted as the No.1 Draft pick. Has huge expectations placed on him, but has the character to handle the pressure. Is related to former Hawks’ John Kennedy and Peter Russo – both his uncle – and ironically is likely to be drafted by Hawthorn. The Hawks claimed the first pick in the Draft from Fremantle after giving up young gun Trent Croad, due to Ball being rated by many as the best young midfielder going around. Produced fine results in the 20m Sprint, 3km-time trial and shuttle run.

13. JAMES BARTEL (Geelong Falcons) – Was too young to be drafted last year after he was invited to the 2000 Draft Camp, but is likely to be hot property in 2001. Has been touted as a Top 15 Draft pick and showed glimpses of his talent in the skills session – where he is rated as a ball magnet.

14. ANDREW CARRAZZO (Oakleigh Chargers) – Had stress problems in his left shin and was unable to run.

15. XAVIER CLARKE (St Marys) – Exciting youngster, who shone in the 20m sprint with a time of 2.94. Clarke, has a terrific character, possesses great skills and is touted as a 1st Round draftee. Is rated the best player under-age player from the Northern Territory. Will be one to watch.

16. RICHARD COLE (Pioneers/Eastern Ranges) – Originally from Tennant Creek in the Northern Territory, Cole shifted to Victoria where he played TAC Cup with the Eastern Ranges. Made his second appearance at the Draft Camp, after he attended, yet was too young to be selected in the 2000 National Draft. Was severely restricted at the camp with multiple injuries, but like Clarke, looms as a 1st Round Draft choice.

17. RYAN CROWLEY (Calder Cannons) – Had a viral infection and was restricted with some results, but still managed to record a solid result in the 3km-Time Trial.

18. MARK DUBYNA (Sandringham Dragons) – Topped the 20m Sprint in the medium midfielders and also produced good results in the agility tests.

19. STEVEN EICHNER (Port Magpies) – Similar looking type to another former Magpie and current Demon in Troy Broadbridge. Eichner topped the standing vertical jump in his group, while he also came first off the left foot in the running vertical jump. He also recorded good results in the 20m Sprint.

20. CRAIG GLANCY (East Perth) – Came second in the medium midfielders shuttle run, however he also missed some events due to injury, including the running vertical jump.

21. JASON GRAM (Gippsland Power) – Showed good flexibility at the Camp, while he also achieved excellent results in the 3km-Time Trial in his division.

22. CHRIS JUDD (Sandringham Dragons) – Is another young gun rated as a Top 5-6 pick. Judd was unable to attend the camp due to a shoulder reconstruction. Is thought to be almost a complete package in terms of athletic ability.

23. JAMES KELLY (Calder Cannons) – Had a terrific camp, shining in the 20m sprint, agility and shuttle run tests. His performance in Canberra lifted his rating considerably.

24. MARK McGOUGH (Murray Bushrangers) – Produced a fine result in the 3km-Time Trial, while he also topped the arm and handspan measurements in the medium midfielders group.

25. BRENT MOLONEY (Geelong Falcons) – Had a consistent Draft Camp showing good speed and endurance, Moloney is a hard/tough midfielder, who is a great kick for accuracy and distance.

26. BRENT REILLY (Calder Cannons) – Had a collarbone problem, was able to run, but was unable to participate in full contact drills. Reilly, a highly rated midfielder, is being touted as a likely 1st Round Draft pick.

27. JOEL REYNOLDS (Geelong Falcons) – Had a viral illness and was unable to complete the running tasks at the camp.

28. CLANCY RUDEFORTH (Claremont) – Was limited at the camp due to osteitis pubis.

29. NICHOLAS TRENFIELD (Assumption) – The third oldest player to be invited to the Draft Camp, Trenfield was limited at the camp with injuries and was unable to participate in all of the events.

30. JARRAD WRIGHT (Woodville-West Torrens) – A clean ball-handler who reads the game well, Wright recorded an impressive time in the 20m Sprint.

Medium Forwards

31. NICK DAL SANTO (Bendigo Pioneers) – Promising midfielder or forward who recorded good results in the standing vertical jump. Dal Santo has also been touted as a potential 1st or 2nd Round Draft Pick.

32. JUSTIN DAVIES (Murray Bushrangers) – Had an excellent Draft Camp, with fine results in the 3km-time trial (10:30) and shuttle run (15.03). One of the more quirky statistics saw Davies measure a handspan of 246. Along with David Rodan and Josh Dicketts – Davies won his group in both the 3km-time trial and shuttle run. His effort in the shuttle run was exceptional.

33. CHARLIE GARDINER (Sandringham Dragons) – Was an impressive performer in the standing vertical jump, where he recorded a score of 250cm in the combined group of medium forwards/defenders. Gardiner is a classy half-forward/midfielder.

34. LUKE HAWKINS (Old Scotch) – Was the oldest player to attend the 2001 Draft Camp at 23 years of age and was the only squad member to be born in the 1970s. Hawkins impressed in 2001, when he kicked 54 goals in the VAFA before crossing to Essendon mid-way through the year in the VFL. Showed good ball work at the skills session during the camp.

35. LUKE HODGE (Geelong Falcons) – Another young gun, certain to be in the Top 10, yet likely to be taken no later than pick five. Has been touted as a No.1 pick, but should be around the 3-4 mark. He missed most of the season with osteitis pubis, but still showed his class at the camp with a running vertical jump of 79, from the right foot. Was rated as arguably the most versatile player at the Draft Camp.

36. JOSH HOULIHAN (Murray Bushrangers) – Yet another Houlihan in the system! Similar size and type to his brothers – Ryan (Carlton) and Adam (Geelong). Josh produced an excellent run in the 3km-Time Trial.

37. STEVE JOHNSON (Murray Bushrangers) – Johnson has been touted as a potential 1st or 2nd round Draft choice, who recorded an excellent result in the shuttle run.

38. KIERAN McGUINNESS (Eastern Ranges) – Had a fine Draft Camp, particularly in the 20m Sprint (2.92) and the agility testing, which no doubt pushed his rating up the ladder.

Tall Forwards

47. JORDON BARHAM (Calder Cannons) – Sent a major scare through the Camp, when he flew in a marking contest and landed awkwardly to hurt his knee during the skills session at Phillip. Barham looked seriously injured at first, however he was able to hobble from the ground, when the stretcher looked as if it was needed. The result was a jarred knee. A talented forward who shone in the TAC Cup Grand Final.

48. RYAN BROWN (Dandenong Stingrays) – Took some strong marks during the skills session at Phillip, where he also used his vertical leap well in pack situations. Kicked more than 40 goals this year for the Stingrays.

49. CAMERON CROAD (Oakleigh Chargers) – It was a big week for the Croad family, with Trent undergoing surgery before waking up to find out he was shifting to Fremantle, while younger brother Cameron was selected as part of the Draft Camp. Unfortunately for Cameron, he was struck down with a case of tonsillitis, which limited his impact in Canberra – although he was outstanding in the vertical jump.

50. TOM DAVIDSON (Geelong Falcons) – Promising tall forward who had an excellent Draft Camp with strong results in the 20m Sprint test, agility and shuttle run. Could go as early as a 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice.

51. DAVID HALE (Broadbeach) – A 200cm forward who looms as a potential 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice, due to his height being a major drawcard for recruiters. Hale was an outstanding performer in the standing vertical jump, after recording a height of 268cm.

52. ASHLEY HANSEN (Oakleigh Chargers) – Another tall option likely to be sounded out in the Top 30, Hansen had a fine Draft Camp, where he recorded a time of 10:48 in the 3km-Time Trial. He also had the largest handspan of the Draft Camp squad (247), along with Josh Dicketts. The son of football broadcaster Clark.

53. TRENT HENTSCHEL (Woodville-West Torrens/Palmerston) – Showed good agility at the camp, while his physical attributes matched up well – including his arm length and standing reach measurements. Hentschel led the goalkicking in the Northern Territory this year, before shifting to the SANFL.

54. PAUL JOHNSON (Dandenong Stingrays) – Had a stress related injury of the right ankle and was limited in his Draft Camp activities.

55. MATT McCARTHY (Old Xaverians) – After VAFA opponent Luke Hawkins, McCarthy was the second oldest player at the Draft Camp. Recorded excellent results in both the tall forwards standing and running vertical jumps – including first off the left and right foot in the running vertical jump.

56. HENRY PLAYFAIR (NSW/ACT Rams) – Produced an excellent standing vertical jump in his group, while he also measured good arm and handspans. A strong marking type who is impressive at ground level.

57. GRAHAM POLAK (East Fremantle) – Arguably the best tall at the Draft Camp, Polak was touted during the year as a No.1 pick, yet will probably be in the 3-5 category, simply because of the needs of other clubs. Had terrific results in both the 20m sprint and the agility test and is the type of player recruiting staff drool over, as he is tall, agile and quick.

58. AARON ROGERS (NSW/ACT Rams) – A tall, strong marking forward, Rogers produced consistent results at the Draft Camp in both the shuttle run and the 3km-Time Trial.

59. DAMON WHITE (Perth) – Tall marking forward who pulled in some towering marks during the skills session at Phillip. His leap and power in the air was a feature of the session, which would have no doubt lifted his rating.

41. BEN KANE (Eastern Ranges) – Had very consistent results in the medium forwards/defenders vertical jump tests, where he topped the right footers in his group for the running vertical jump.

42. SAM POWER (Oakleigh Chargers) – Missed the Draft Camp due to an early school exam (German), Power is a highly rated player who is likely to be taken in the Top 15. He is taller than Luke – his older brother and premiership player with the Brisbane Lions.

43. JACOB SCHUBACK (Gippsland Power) – Had an excellent Draft Camp where he shone in the 20m Sprint (2.92), agility and shuttle run drills. Could go as high as a 1st or 2nd Round Draft choice.

44. NATHAN STREET (Tassie Mariners) – Completely different shape to his brother Peter (who stands well over 200cm) and plays for Geelong. Nathan is 181cm, yet had an outstanding camp, where he shone in the 20m Sprint, agility, 3km-Time Trial and Shuttle Run pursuits.

45. ASHLEY WATSON (Bendigo Pioneers) – Was a stand out performer at the Draft Camp, notching up fine results in the 20m Sprint (2.96), agility, 3km-Time Trial (10:47) and Shuttle Run (14.10) testing.

46. ANDREW WELSH (Calder Cannons) – Had good results in the 3km-Time Trial and also the running vertical jump off the right foot. A hard at the ball player.

69. LEWIS ROBERTS-THOMSON (NSW/ACT Rams) – Was nominated as a Sydney player (under the developing markets rule) during his time in Canberra.
