This really does pinpoint what areas we need to work on, besides our ruck division. Tackles are way down as well. Given these stats we could be a top 4 team if we can lift in these areas.

Why Geelong? Hawthorn are the Premiers.

Yep in both hitouts (especially to advantage) and tackling we've been down the bottom for years and all of Wallace's tenure. You would hope with young bodies maturing that our tackling pressure starts going up. We need a 200+cm ruckman for our hitout numbers to improve.

Hawthorn were better on GF day

Compare the record over two years though and the better side should stand out, ie Geelong.

Yea they are, they won that 1 game against Geelong this season.
Looking at the stats though I think Geelong were the better team overall for the seaon therefore still the benchmark.
If thats not the case Hawtorn wouldnt have gone into the GF as severe underdogs.

Hitouts are a hard one to fix overnight, I think wallace and the clubs recruiting has been aimed at fixing the general skill level of players, mid field and mid sized players in particular.

Ruckmen seem to take until 24 to mature (look at Mark Blake at geelong as a perfect example, last year at 22 he was losing contests so they chose stephen king for the final, this year he was winning contests and he was their better ruckman in the finals and he wont hit his peak until this year when he is age 24 imho).  Given wallace has been there 4 years any ruckmen he recruited is only 22 now, so we are stuck relying on Troy Simmonds (who has been a really good player for richmond given he has had to handle the ruck largely by himself) until pattison gets old enough and bulks up enough and angus graham and dean putt come through too.

pattison recruited 2004 - wallaces first year
graham recruited 2007
putt recruited 2007 rookie list

So the focus has not been on ruckmen in those early years, notably they also took gourdis last year who got dropped recently.

Putt is on the senior list, not the rookie list.

I'd like to see a comparison with a team that is closer to us developmental-wise as well.

It's easy to point out our shortcomings against a top side, that's what we should be aiming at. We all know tha. Let's see where we stand compared with our cohort.

Graham was drafted in 2005 btw (pick 5 rookie draft).

Carlton would be closer to our developmental level (maybe a fraction ahead). They had major hitout deficiencies as well which is why they chased after and got Warnock.

Carlton were 11th in tackles (51.3) compared to our 16th (48.7). Mind you the Hawks and Dogs were equal 12th overall (51.2).
