GC17 have eyes on McGuane
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:44:59 PM »
from the Sunday Herald-Sun  (it's not on the net so I typed it out)

Rick in hot spot

IF you believe the Gold Coast 17 crew, player agent Ricky Nixon, of Flying Start, has a set of books that could help launch the "Coasters'' in rocket style. They've discovered Nixon manages five locally produced AFL players making a name in the big time. They include the prized Nick Riewoldt, Hawk premiership player Brent Renouf, Luke McGuane, David Hale and Sam Gilbert. The Gold Coasters are salivating over the knowledge that by the time launch day arrives, the six will have had to negotiate new terms with their clubs.

Just as he is starting to show some real promise then the possibility of defection arises! I would go so far as to say he will become our No. 1 backman in the next year or two so his loss would hurt.

At the moment our future backline seems to be shaping up as -

Thursfield      McGuane        Moore

McMahon       Rance           Tambling

with Schulz, and occasionally Newman, thrown in the mix at present. This is one of the strongest and most promising areas of our team. If McGuane was to move on I feel it would be very damaging to our future especially if Rance does not come on like we hope he will.

good news that our players have trade value,

even better that the teams that value them have half the picks in the 1st round of the draft.

Mcguane is not an untoucheable

While I like McGuane, the following scenario would be great.

McGuane plays out of his skin and has a Kelvin Moore-esque year.

Rance plays 5-6 games and really fits in well and looks a capable replacement.

The Gold Coast offer a top ten pick for McGuane.

We get the 09 premiership plus an early draft pick!

Give up pick #1 and they can have him.

Seriously a top ten pick would be very tempting especially if Rance comes on.

That is a very exciting backline.

I for one, don't want to lose any player who will be part of our spine. These players are so hard to find, the last thing we need is for other clubs to scoop them up when we are about to cash in on their development.

The stand out quality that McGuane brings to the table is grunt. His competitive spirit is fantastic. I remember seeing him sling buddy to the ground r17 and stand over him as if to say "Mate, not today". It was great and we don't have enough players on our list who can do that.

Has McGuane re-signed yet?

There was no mention of Lukey when we signed up 10 at once.

True. They'll probably be after Rainesy as well.

Wouldn't they be after any player's that are coming out of contrat at that time. But to get a #1 pick would be good for us.
