March 3, 2009 - 2:34PM
At least eight players in the Sri Lankan national cricket team were hurt in a shooting while being driven to the Lahore cricket stadium in Pakistan on Tuesday.
The team bus came under fire as the players headed to the Gaddafi stadium for the third day of the second Test against Pakistan in the eastern city of Lahore.
Thilan Samaraweera was one of those reportedly hurt. Skipper Mahela Jayawardena was slightly wounded in the foot, his father told a local television station after speaking with him by telephone.
Sri Lankan team manager Brendon Kruppu confirmed the incident and said star wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara was among the injured.
Indian TV network Zee News reported two grenades were lobbed at the Sri Lankan team as it moved from Liberty Chowk to Polo Ground Road.
There was then "indiscriminate firing'', it said.
Three policemen have died and two others were injured, it said.
Their bus came under fire, their manager Brenden Kurrupu told AFP.
The tour has reportedly been cancelled.
"We are assessing the situation," Pakistan cricket board chief Ejaz Butt said.
Australia will play Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates in May in five one-day and Twenty20 internationals.
Australia haven't toured Pakistan since 1998 because of security concerns.
