Tiger cubs shine in SheppartonRichmond’s emerging stars were given another tick of approval in last Friday night’s NAB Challenge match against St Kilda in Shepparton.
Resting many of its stars ahead of a final pre-season hitout against Brisbane on the Gold Coast this week, the Club’s “next wave” took their chance to experience some valuable game time against a seasoned Saints’ outfit.
The Tigers’ coaching staff, including stand-in coach David King, had plenty to smile about.
“Our plan was to play our younger players in the third week of the NAB series, like a lot of the other teams have . . . we were thrilled with some of the efforts of the younger guys,” King said.
“We set a few challenges in terms of the young rucks against the experienced rucks, and their experienced ball-getters in the middle of the ground.
“Sure, they (the Saints) got hold of them in the end, but there were patches in the game where we were thrilled with their output.
“It’s a real stepping stone for the Club and those younger players.”
King made special mention of the younger Richmond ruckmen, who in the absence of regulars Troy Simmonds and Adam Pattison, competed manfully against the experienced St Kilda duo of Steven King and Michael Gardiner.
Tyrone Vickery, in just his second game at senior league level, again showed promising signs, while debutant Andrew Browne, and 21-year-old Angus Graham, looked at home at the highest level.
Mature-age rookie, Jarrod Silvester, outlined the considerable depth of the Tigers’ defensive stocks by being named among the team’s best players on the night.
Also in defence, 19-year-old Alex Rance continued to display his impressive credentials after almost breaking through for senior selection last season.
Richmond got through the match unscathed injury-wise, and will welcome back several big names for the final NAB series match this Friday night.
Among those missing from the match against St Kilda in Shepparton were Matthew Richardson, Brett Deledio, Chris Newman, Nathan Brown, Nathan Foley, Ben Cousins, Jack Riewoldt and Kelvin Moore.
