COACHES rarely name names in public post-match lashings, so who was the Richmond coach talking about? The Herald Sun can reveal it was two of Terry Wallace's finest - Nathan Foley and Nathan Brown.
Foley had 31 disposals - 10 of those resulted in the Tigers losing possession to Carlton.
Brown had 18 disposals - nine resulted in turnovers.
The numbers are damning in the extreme given only West Coast's Chad Fletcher turned it over more in Round 1 - and he is hardly known as Mr Skills.
Brown, in particular, is usually as silky skilled as they come. At his best, his well-weighted left-foot passes are dynamite.
So something went horribly wrong for the Tigers as the Blues turned up the pressure in a game that Wallace said had a build up like a Grand Final.
Good sides will punish your mistakes and Carlton kicked 16 of their 23 goals directly from Tiger turnovers.
Plenty picked Richmond to win, and the Tigers might yet make the eight, but the turnovers were also there for all to see in the NAB Cup loss to Collingwood three weeks earlier.
Champion Data is for the first time keeping official turnover stats this year and the alarm bells started early against the Pies.
Ben Cousins' reasonably successful debut for the club took the heat off what was a sloppy performance.
If you produce more turnovers than a Danish bakery, you are always going to be in deep trouble.
Wallace summed it up in a Herald Sun interview after the Magpies game.
"Eleven goals to four on turnovers for the night," Wallace said.
"Unless you can use the ball, your place in the game is in jeopardy."
So that is 11 goals from turnovers in a NAB Cup game and 16 in Round 1.
This is a worrying trend heading into a clash with Geelong, which can pressure and put the squeeze on opponents like no other.
Against the Pies, Brett Deledio committed nine turnovers, Cousins seven and Foley four.
Of the 11 goals caused by turnovers, Champion Data credited Deledio with two, Alex Rance with two and Shane Edwards with two.
Against a young Carlton team intent on chasing and tackling, Richmond's skills buckled. And too many blunders were made in defence.
Even the normally sure-footed Deledio missed his intended target twice from kick-ins.
Only Fremantle suffered more pain in the turnover stakes in Round 1, with the Dogs directly turning 18 Dockers stuff-ups into goals.
You would think Brown has too much class to have another turnover shocker against the Cats.
Wallace can only hope a few of Brown's mates can be relied on for similar improvement.
