Schwass slams former AFL greats in defence of Sheedy

Former premiership winning player Wayne Schwass has slammed a host of former AFL players over their failed and public attempt to lure coaching great Kevin Sheedy to the Richmond Tigers next season.

Schwass told BigPond Sports Weekend, “It was led by Kevin Bartlett, Francis Bourke and a few other high profile people and I think it made it a very uncomfortable position for the Richmond football club, it also put Sheed’s under an enormous amount of pressure.”

“He is an icon of this game and I think he deserves the respect he has worked so long and for. So I’m just disappointed for him and the football club that they were put in that position.”

“He said publicly in the paper today that he feels embarrassed and that his integrity has been brought into question because of the way it’s been handled.”

“My personal view was that the club needed to go in a different direction...if he was that good then let him go through the normal process, if at the end of that process he comes out on top the pecking order then give him the job.”

Injured Richmond midfielder Nathan Foley added, “I think the club is going to go through a very stringent interviewing process and I’m not sure who has and hasn’t put up their hand at this stage, but Kevin obviously decided that it wasn’t going to be for him.”
