WITH all the media speculation about the 2009 Richmond coaching job, it is interesting to look back at the low-key way the Tigers used to go about finding a coach.

This was the advert placed in the local newspaper, The Argus, at the end of its 1932 premiership season when Frank "Checker" Hughes was poached to Melbourne by its secretary Percy Page with the lure of also providing him with a job in his printing factory.

Former Richmond VFA player (and ex-Saint) Billy Schmidt applied and became coach, taking the Tigers to the grand final only to lose to South Melbourne. He never coached them again.

A much more simplier time when the media didn't drive club decisions or supporter speculation.

It will actually be nice to have all this Bucks bulldust finished so we can concentrate on securing the best candidate for the coaching position. The media love to exert pressure on decisions and with Collingwood deciding to implode by taking on Buckley, the only pressure influence they may attempt to generate will be the 'competition' between us and Norf to get the best coach (whoever they all agree takes over the mantle for Buckley) 

Be prepared for it - Hardwick will suddenly become the media favourite and they will be acclaiming the club that gets him the 'winner'!!

It's funny though, we will hear very little over what a farce and failure North's attempts to secure Bucks has been but if that was the Tigers....well we all have seen the evidence of the negative media hype aimed at Richmond earlier in the year.

Double standards and too many media people out there continually gunning for Richmond to fail in some way.

Hardwick is the best candidate, the club who gets him wins. Wherever hes been the club has won flags. Thats the truth of it.
