AT first glance it looks a little tough, but when you reflect on the task at hand it makes some sense.

The AFL will spare nothing to ensure the Gold Coast and western Sydney teams are instantly successful when they come on line in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

.... so it is paramount for established clubs to prepare now for what will be slim pickings over the next five to 10 years.

Already several clubs have made good headway.

Richmond has matured as a club. Craig Cameron has taken control as boss of all things football, a new coach is not far away, the frothing expectation of Ben Cousins has subsided and coach Terry Wallace slipped away. Former player Brendon Gale has taken over as chief executive from Steve Wright who has left him with a $2million war chest. With Wallace gone, president Gary March appears a more confident man. Immediately, the club should look to fill its list with the best young talent about.

If teams are to pass the exams of 2011 and 2012 they must surely do their swatting now.
