Same ol' story
« on: August 22, 2009, 10:25:13 PM »
I think tonights game epitomizes the tigers problems with the list. We have no dominating senior players (Cuz is senior but dont count him due to him being a recent acquisition), the skill level both by foot and hand is the worst in the competition by a long way. The decision making makes me think that when recruiting players we should insist they do an IQ test. This list must contain some of the most stupid players in the game.

Our rucking stocks i feel are a real worry, Angus Graham for a player who has been around a little while has just not developed adequately. He is very slow, has no vertical leap and is not sure above his head. Patto just doesnt seem to be the answer and Simmonds has a turning circle of a semi trailer. Browne has been playing for Coburg reserves and is developing but I cannot see him being a number one ruckman in the short term. If Simmonds retires next year then Graham becomes our number one, even if we get our gun midfielders back we will be smashed in the hit outs. Tonight Graham was clearly beaten by a guy coming back from two knee reconstructions.

I do hate to be pessimistic but Hinckley or Hardwick will have their work cut out trying to gather a competitive list for next year. With so many players expected to be turned over i cannot see how given the list we have and the need for new recruits to come through with Coburg that we can be up and running early in the new season.

We've got Vickery mid-to-long term as a potential ruckman as well.

It's the blantant turnovers that hurt us the most every week. The new coach whoever he is is going to have to strip everything back to basics from the start of preseason. Even then as I said in another thread 2010 should be used as a development/training year given the task at hand and then use 2011 as a springboard to the future. The main focus should be on fitness and footskills. From the first training session have the footys out. As a simplified way to simulate some pressure on the kicker have someone start 5m behind chasing and then likewise with the receiver. Just repetitive lead-up 25-30m flat kicks to advantage under some pressure that must hit the target everytime. Try to eliminate the absolute howlers that go over a teammate's head straight into the arms of the opposition who then waltz into an easy goal.

I am not normally a pessimistic person but you can practically write off 2010 right now.  As MT says the focus for next year should be on development/training.

We are faced with another clean out and with the need to bring young draftees into our side we will be lucky to be competitve in 2011 IMO.
