Here's the official compensation statement from the AFL

Players will be ranked in five separate categories to determine the level of compensation their club will receive.

For a player who meets the highest category of the compensation ranking, and is therefore categorised as a ‘top-echelon’ player, the Commission accepted a recommendation to increase the compensation for these players, which would now see a club receive a Round One Selection and a second selection at the mid-point of Round One, placed after the teams that have missed the finals have had their Round One Selection and before the teams that have competed in the finals have their Round One Selection.

The other categories of compensation would be in four categories - Round One Selection, End of Round One Selection, Round Two Selection and Round Three Selection. A club may elect to use its compensation selection(s) at its choice at any of the next five national drafts and its compensation pick in a round would come immediately after its pick in that year’s draft, with the exception of any Round One picks at the 2010 and 2011 Drafts, which can only be utilised at the end of Round One.

AFL Talent Identification Manager Kevin Sheehan and AFL Game Analysis Manager Andrew McKay will review each compensation selection that is awarded, according to the formula, to determine that it is appropriate. They will have the power to recommend a revised compensation outcome to AFL General Manager Football Operations Adrian Anderson if the formula produces an anomalous result.

“The compensation is designed to reflect the relative values of various players to one another and to reflect the upside of younger players, but it is not designed to fully compensate a club for the loss of a player as the List Establishment Working Group understands that all clubs will have to make sacrifices in the list establishment for the expansion teams.

“Clubs at the bottom of the ladder are sacrificing early draft picks in the compromised drafts and successful clubs will sacrifice by receiving lesser compensation for losing established players, with their compensation picks placed later in the draft,” Mr Dillon said.

The media keep harping on about Martin and GWS  :sleep. It was also the first thing Mark Doran mentioned on radio straight after our win over Brisbane  ::).

While the AFL is yet to finalise the compensation system for teams that lose stars to the Gold Coast, Richmond's boom youngster Dustin Martin was used to demonstrate the unfairness of the initial rules - in which Martin could be lost to GWS, with the Tigers receiving only a second-round draft pick.

The AFL executive is now working to revise those compensation rules and while there is much focus on what is seen as the Gary Ablett rule - the compensation Geelong would receive if it lost him to Gold Coast - there is more concern at commission and executive level about the possibility of a lowly club receiving scant return for losing a 20-year-old.

The initial formula meant that a player such as Martin, who is not paid much in his first two seasons, would be measured by what he was paid by his previous club, not the new team if it signed him.

The Tigers are confident of retaining Martin, who has attracted the interest of GWS and is simply being used as an hypothetical by the AFL.

Under the revised formula, which is yet to be settled, the compensation for a younger player such as Martin would be based upon what the new club offered him, not his existing contract.

I don't care if the greedy AFL change the rules.

They just want to try and snab Martin from us the dirty corrupt greedy bastards.

The AFL wants to be like FIFA.

Now the Greek real estate agent has changed the rules, that smells fishy to me like they are ringing up Martin to try to get him to GWS.

The greedy one desperate to get his tv rights bags of money.

No number one draft pick will replace a player the calibre of Martin.

These players come around once in a blue moon.

AFL are stuffing arseholes if they let this go through.

Richmond should move heaven and earth to keep this kid, he's better than Selwood and in the same league as Judd and Ablett.

Along with Ablett, Western Bulldog playmaker Jarrod Harbrow and Richmond youngster Dustin Martin -- both out of contract at the end of the season -- are also expected to fall into the "top echelon" category available to the Gold Coast and Greater Western Sydney franchises.

How would Harbrow be a "top echelon" player?
He's a rookie pick, not a pick 3

Willie, you'd probably know this. Do u know where Martin's parents live. I was eavesdropping on a conversation and they said Martin lived with the "chairman" of RFC because his folks live in Sydney. Is that true anyone?

martin lives with gary march

his dad is in sydney

his mum in castlemaine, they are divorced

if that is the case, shift his dad here in melbourne!
