Maybe it would be different meeting Dusty now that I'm 35, but I met Richo when I was 21 and caring for his mum + dad in hospital.

Childhood hero and all.

I was lost for words lmao. Properly star struck, couldn't think properly.

I was at an underground in bar at age 21 and Richo went to the bar at the same time by fluke and it was my shout for the group I was with

We said gday .. I didn’t indicate knowledge of who he was

Richo asked me if I followed footy and told him I’d been a Richmond member my entire life

He asked why I didn’t say anything and I told him he should be able to enjoy himself without being annoyed by fans

The great man thanked me and paid for my round of $60

Yep I said nothing.

He asked how his mum was going, I told him what was wrong.

All the girls wanted photos with him. Vomit.

I think I just asked if he'd watched the footy on the weekend and he commented that it's always good to beat Collingwood (pre season game).

Still a great moment for me.

I met Dusty briefly at the kids clinic, my son copped a knock and went down like a sack of potatoes. Dusty was there and dusted him off (pardon the pun). Was a real nice guy and looked after my boy when he didn't have to. I said thanks and mentioned he was doing a great job at the clinic, said it was one of the best parts of the job and he went back to the kids.

I met Richo a heap of times. Just one of the great persons who is in the public eye. Up there with Dermie as the top 2 I reckon. My fav memory was his testimonial. The poor guy was exhausted. I hadn't chatted to him yet, as I would normally just say G'Day at any of the functions, he was heading to the toilet and walked passed him and I said some comment of congratulations, he looked knackered and a bit over the whole thing and enormous attention. He just nodded, smiled and kept walking. Then he stopped, came back, shook my hand and said thanks and asked how my night was going. Was the shortest chat I had with him but one that stuck and really painted the picture of the guy he was. He knew how much he meant to the fans and how much it meant to us when he engaged with them. Something I think Dusty absolutely understood but was very much out of his comfort zone. That time I could tell Richo was over it, and wouldn't have bothered me if he kept walking at all, but the fact he stopped and came back when he was clearly knackered just showed what a bloke he was.

They say never meet your idols but Richo was a huge exception to that rule. Reckon I met him a dozen times and every time was a really memorable moment as a fan.

Cho = champion player and champion bloke
Dusty = CHAMPION player

The two can be compared on the field (Dusty wins just), they can’t be compared off it .. would be like comparing the RFC to Manangatang Thirds

There is a lot about Dusty off the field that is excused because he’s a champion and good luck to that

As someone that lived in the Kyneton/Malmsbury/Castlemaine area , Dusty is what he is

A sensational footballer

I’ll leave it at that

Let’s not pretend he’s a champion bloke

My mate was on the cash vans at a chip company in the early 90’s and met Peter Daicos at his pub Bensons. Said he was a lifelong fan, his fave player - Daics rolled his eyes and asked what he wanted. A few months later when he was chasing up a late payment, he discovered he couldn’t sign a cheque because he was a bankrupt.
Fair to say my mate never saw Daics as a legend after that.
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Considering what he came from -on both sides- it's a wonder he's not a whole lot worse........:shh

Met Nick at a charity function last week. Fair to say he's very different when cameras are off. Says all the right things on TV and with a microphone, very well trained. Want interested in anything when it was fan engagement time. That stuff stinks for me, at least Dusty doesn't pretend, he's a private guy and isn't comfortable in engagement scene, have to respect that, and always will.

The Suns won't be trying to convince Dusty to flip on his retirement decision this off-season.

McClure will be still be insisting on it at Dusty's Hall of Fame induction....."be prepared for a shock announcement during his speech.' - then  he won't even turn up.... :shh

What an odd turn of events.

Had some interesting chats with much more important people that me, what is pretty clear.

Dusty absolutely did not approach GC, it would have only been Ralph if at all, I can't really resonate that the SUNs made it all up which was sort of hinted at.

The decision for Wayne Campbell to come out publicly and say Dusty approached the Suns was as odd a decision as ever.
1 - Throwing Dusty or his management under the bus / spotlight would have had a negative effect. Was he trying to coax him to come? Camerons comments that they won't add to Dusty's own words that he's happily retired sounds like an admission of defeat in that they were the ones who were actively trying.
2 - There is a chance that Ralph didn't approach GC and GC just made it up, but why would Campbell lie about it. Many close to Dusty were baffled finding out that Dusty had apparently approached GC.

Just a very odd situation where the only believable outcome is Ralph Carr approaching Suns without full Dusty approval to simply enquire, and it's gained no real legs except in the media. Hard to believe Dusty approached GC, hard to believe Suns just made it all up.

Regardless. Dusty Tiger 4 Life.
