Gary March on SEN

March on SEN at 2.15pm

* Sad day today.

* We thought Richo would play again. When he went OS (Sept) he and we thought he was going okay. Came back and had a setback. Saw the surgeon and didn't get good news so he felt he couldn't go on.

* You'd love to give him the fanfare of a send off game. We play a big home game in round 1 against Carlton so we'll be organising something big around that for Richo.

* Richo will go down in our top 5 players of all time in Gary's opinion alongside Dyer, Royce, KB and Bourke. He's been Richmond for the past 17 years. He gave supporters so much joy during such a lean period. You can't replace him but life goes on. We'll still have him involved in the club in some fashion.

* Fantastic player but also person. Remember him going up to the country and signing autographs for all the kids. Just a sign of the great person Richo is. He's an ambassador for the club. A great public speaker as well so we'll use in corporate functions. He'll increase his media commitments but he's got the keys to the Club as far as Gary goes.

* In top 3 contested marks every year over the time he played.

* Probably with his record he could have had more B&Fs but he finished top 3 in ten of those years. It would've been fitting if he had got up in the Brownlow last year.

* Coaching isn't the way Richo wants to go. Not coaching material. But who knows down the track he may change his mind.

* A pretty young list we've got now. Saw them training today. There's Cuz and Simmo then you have to go down to Newy at 26. The rest are young guys. There's going to be a lot of weight on the shoulders on Cuz, Simmo and Newy next year.

* Very happy for Hardwick not to be in the media. We've got Benny to do the media work. We've got a new coach with a new gameplan and he needs to be with the players. If the media doesn't like it then bad luck.

* March very happy with Tiger Woods being here. The $3 million spent was money well spent. Sold out a lot of stuff.

Please refer to another thread that explains but in summary

March is involved in the Masters merchandise - his company has the licence.

He was asked about that...

They can't hide from big build up games forever if the team is to become a top side. Hopefully with a newer younger list the old weak mentality can change to a stronger newer one which thrives under pressure as the cubs develop and come through together. That seems to be Hardwick's message to them too.

More to the point I don't see this game as being as big as last seasons first up game. Last season was meant to be the two up-and-coming Victorian teams, two juggernauts gathering pace, Cousins, Cousins vs Judd.

Next year will have only a fraction of the pressure the boys cracked under last season. Richo will be great motivation IMHO and not make the boys nervous. Carlton might be a bit nervous without Judd but still being favourites who expect to play finals in 2010.

That's true Jake. There'll be no expectations at all next year as we'll be spoon favourites so that kind of pressure won't be on the team. The pressure will be more on Carlton and how they go next year without Fev kicking most of their goals. A loss to us given their next 8 games are tough could really derail their year  :pray.
