Agreed.

Pay $1,000 to a charity what a joke. Make it $10,000.

Grimes was a monster in this one. He had eight spoils and eight intercepts, including a couple of telling marks on the last line as the Bombers desperately attempted to swing the momentum in the third quarter. Whilst the Tigers have an incredible back six, Grimes’ presence and cool head under pressure are a big part of making them so damn effective.

Grimes has handed over duties of taking the best forward to Noah Balta this season. He has blokes like David Astbury, when fit, helping him hold the fort, and he has weapons like Nick Vlastuin, Jayden Short, and Liam Baker creating run from the defensive 50, but he is the glue that holds this defence together, and in a big one-off game, if you offer me Moore, Andrews, Weitering or Grimes in a do-or-die situation, I know who I am picking.

That’d be the guy who has been there and done that. And has the premiership medals to prove it.

‘Boy, has it gone downhill for you’: Magistrate lashes Bombers fan who threatened Tigers star Dylan Grimes

By Erin Pearson and Adam Cooper

June 23, 2021 — 5.19pm

A “passionate” Essendon supporter who unleashed a tirade of abuse and threats against Richmond player Dylan Grimes following a contentious 2020 game has been banned from attending similar matches after pleading guilty.

Magistrate Richard Pithouse labelled 40-year-old Frankston man Christopher Zammit’s post-game behaviour utterly offensive and unnecessary after he used his mobile phone to send Instagram messages to Mr Grimes, including threatening to rape his wife, following the footballer receiving a controversial free kick in the Tigers’ round-13 win over Essendon last year.

The free kick denied Essendon’s Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti a goal. Mr Grimes was later accused of staging to get the free kick but was ultimately cleared of doing so by the AFL tribunal.

Frankston Magistrates Court heard Zammit, a father of four, also tracked down the work phone number of an AFL umpire and left a string of cryptic voicemail messages following his umpiring in an Essendon and Brisbane match the Dons lost 91-28 on July 31.

“Over the last 18 months ... we’ve gotten used to sitting at home watching television, watching football. It’s not nearly as boisterous or as much fun as when you are there, but your frustrations and anger were totally misconceived,” Mr Pithouse said.

“There is a rule of thumb that my wife has taught me ... that if you are going to send a sensational text don’t do it until the next day because 99 times out of 100 you won’t send it. When you do it on the spur of the moment it can only go downhill from there. And, boy, has it gone downhill for you.”

The court heard Zammit was working in a stressful occupational health and safety role during the COVID-19 pandemic, had a newborn child and was drinking excessively when he posted comments on Instagram photos belonging to Mr Grimes and sent the defender private messages in August.

Zammit’s lawyer, Tim Schocker, said the Frankston man had no criminal record, was university educated and deeply remorseful, evening penning a letter of apology to Mr Grimes.

Mr Schocker said his client had lost his job of more than a decade and had his working-with-children check removed as a consequence of his poor behaviour.

“Somewhat ironically, at one stage he trained to become an umpire for his children’s sport,” Mr Schocker said. “He is genuinely remorseful and sorry for what he has done.”

On Wednesday Zammit pleaded guilty to two charges of using a carriage services to menace. Charges of stalking were withdrawn.

Mr Pithouse spared him a criminal record, handing him to a 12-month good behaviour bond, without conviction, and ordering that he pay $1250 to the Frankston court fund.

The father of four is also prohibited from attending any Essendon and Richmond AFL games during that time.

“No one deserves to be treated in the manner that you treated those people,” Mr Pithouse said.

“The other thing is you don’t do your own club any good, Essendon, by being identified as an Essendon supporter stooping to such vile tactics. It’s unnecessary when your team at present seems to be speaking with their boots.”

Mr Zammit was one of two men charged with stalking Mr Grimes in the days after Richmond’s win over Essendon.

In December Essendon fan Andrew Alexander, of Mitcham, was also placed on a good-behaviour bond without conviction for six months and ordered to donate $1000 to a charity after sending a series of abusive emails to Mr Grimes and the winery the footballer runs with his wife.

Alexander was drunk when he sent the emails – which included threats that Mr Grimes was “f---ed” and “f---ing dead” – two nights after the game, a court heard.

It certainly wasn’t Dylan Grimes’ fault that Richmond suffered a disappointing Round 16 loss to Gold Coast.

With 15 disposals, five marks, and an extremely impressive, game-high 11 intercepts, he clearly was one of Richmond’s scarce winners on the night.

Grimes is averaging 12.7 disposals, 5.3 marks, 8.0 intercepts and 5.4 one-percenters per game this season. He is ranked sixth in the competition for total intercepts.

‘Rubbish, selfish, undisciplined’: Grimes slammed by AFL greats (Foxsports)

-----------------------------------------------------------

Richmond defender Dylan Grimes has been put under the microscope by AFL greats for his “cheap” hit on Giants player Himmelberg that granted his opponent a goal early on Friday night.

Grimes’ action saw the Giants boot a goal mere minutes after another free kick was paid against forward Tom Lynch that denied teammate Jack Riewoldt a great set shot goal from the boundary line.

It was an action from Grimes that left St Kilda legend Nick Riewoldt baffled at the lack of composure from the experienced defender.

“That’s just rubbish, selfish, undisciplined stuff,” he told Fox Footy.

“As a forward, when your back is turned and you cop an elbow like that in the middle of the back, it gives you whiplash, it’s cheap, there’s nothing tough about it. Grimes is better than that.”

Former Brisbane Lions spearhead Jonathan Brown agreed, adding: “I used to hate that when we were playing. It used to make me want to turn around and go bang.”

Especially the last month.

It's really stood out. I watched and thought at times he looks spent (tired)
