Reckon champion is a word used too loosely these days

Super player. Absolute gun when at his best. Not potting him or his worth, but I reserve use of the word champion.

Hart
Richo

Those blokes are champions

Rance, Dusty, Cotchin, Riewoldt etc, champions

I have Grimes a level below. In the Edwards, Deledio etc category. Sensational players, don’t get me wrong, but not champions.

Surely you don’t have grimes and edwards in the same category as Deledio.

Do you have Grimes in the same category as Dusty, Hart, Bartlett etc ?

Not in the same ballpark

Grimes has been a sensational player, zero doubt. Absolute gun. But for me, isn’t a champion.

I was careful not to say champion player and that's why I used the term "champion of our Club". He is a very good player, very good but agree he isnt a champion like Hart, Bartlett, Rioli Snr, Richo or Dusty

But he has been a champion of our Club, great leader on and off the field, loyal to our Club, great to the fans. Always has been a Club first man. That's why I called him a champion of our Club

Champion, champion of the club...whatever.

Dylan Grimes is the absolute epitome of a champion in my book. A preseason draft selection who fought terrible early career injuries to rise to become our most crucial defender (player?) in a premiership year (2019), play a pivotal role in developing a culture that saw us win 3 flags in 4 years, and then captain the club. Champion.

The AFL media bozos consider Tom Spewart  a champion, if that's the case Dylan Grimes is every bit as good imo. So therefore he must be a Champion.

Imo Spewart is overated, sure he's a very good player but not a champion.

No I don’t, but I consider those guys Richmond immortals. I guess it’s not so much the terminology used but moreso that grimes and edwards as gun 1-club players across 3 premiership are clear of Deledio. The likes of dusty, cotch, jack and rance are in that bracket above with our all timers.

As someone pointed out earlier Dylan along with Trent was instrumental in changing how Richmond went about their football it was a profound culture change . For me that further elevates Dylan

Thanks WP for a balanced reply

I love Grimes as a player .. and an even better bloke .. he’s frequently kicked the footy with locals in Woodend , just a great guy

He’s a Richmond superstar no doubt

Just an utter gun

But I’ve just got a hang up on the word champion .. and before the crew bark at me about multiple premiership players etc

That makes Nank, D Rioli and Broad etc champions

They aren’t

As an example, Daniel can look at Maurice as a CHAMPION OF OUR CLUB

Daniel (who is my favourite player), is a superstar .. not a champion

How Dylan Grimes is going now he is no longer captain: “He still speaks up but I think he just doesn’t have that external pressure on him as much any more … he is pretty busy with his farm in Mt Macedon and getting the balance right this year, the captaincy probably did put a lot of pressure on him last year.” - Nick Vlastuin

Better than his last 2 seasons but the question is whether a 2nd or 3rd year player matched his output and whether they would still be getting played
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

He'll play him until he literally can't walk because we've got no choice now... :shh
