Ben Cousins in Hospital (Herald-Sun)

Ben Cousins in hospital
Jon Ralph From: Herald Sun March 12, 2010

RICHMOND says it expects Ben Cousins will be fit and ready to front up in Round 1 despite the abdominal pain that kept him in hospital overnight.

Tigers veteran Cousins will miss Saturday's key warm-up clash against Essendon, with yesterday's tests inconclusive.

The Tigers are confident Cousins will have no lingering issues but the pain was serious enough for him to endure a day of tests at Epworth Hospital.

After suffering pain late on Wednesday he consulted with a club doctor and was admitted to hospital yesterday.

After fasting yesterday, he will have more tests this morning.

Cousins will go into Round 1 short of match practice after missing the Tigers' past two hit-outs, but the club is confident he has enough match fitness to tackle the Blues.

Last year he went into Round 1 after a modified pre-season and famously tore his hamstring after experiencing tightness during the game.

He was named yesterday for the club's Morwell clash against the Bombers before football manager Craig Cameron conceded he was likely to miss the clash.

"It is doubtful that Ben will play against Essendon in the NAB Challenge match in Morwell on Saturday," he said.

"Ben will stay in overnight for observation and will undergo some tests in the morning after he has fasted.

"Ben's condition does not appear serious but as a precautionary measure we would like some tests done to see what the problem is."

While the Tigers are hopeful their midfield champ has only an appendix problem or something similar, the timing is not ideal for the 31-year-old.

He played 15 mostly excellent games last year but three times was forced from the line-up through injury and concussion.

Richmond chief executive Brendon Gale said last night he believed Cousins would quickly recover.

"He just had abdominal pain and they went to get some tests. He has been put in hospital overnight mainly because he has to fast for more tests."

He doesnt know what he's talking about. Stomach ulcers can cause bad stomach pain, but it's not anything like stomach cramps at all.

SEN saying Cuz is still in hospital currently undergoing blood tests to work out what is causing the stomach pains. Tests done yesterday couldn't show the cause.

Cousins waits for medical tests

By Jennifer Witham 10:39 AM Fri 12 March, 2010

RICHMOND midfielder Ben Cousins is still awaiting tests to find out the cause of the abdominal pain that prompted his admission to hospital on Thursday afternoon.

Cousins, 31, was admitted to the Epworth Hospital after he sought medical treatment on Thursday morning for persistent stomach pain.

He was required to fast overnight before undergoing tests to discover the cause of the pain.

A Richmond spokesperson told afl.com.au on Friday morning the tests were scheduled for the afternoon.

It is not yet known if he will require a second night in hospital.

More to follow.

For Bens sake I hope it's nothing serious and for us I hope he ir right for round one other wise we will have him and Foley out, leaves a real dent in our midfield where we would have been the stronger side.

Jon Ralph on SEN just now said Cuz was waiting to have certain tests this arvo so he'll be having them now. No further news on that front.

He said there must be some concern that it's lingered on for two days although Cuz having to wait and fast has caused issues. The club said last night there's nothing to worry about.

Ralph then reckoned Cuz missing the next couple of weeks games will make him go into round 1 lacking match fitness. Someone forgot the following weekend is a rest weekend for all clubs  :wallywink so Cuz will only miss tomorrow's one practice match.

Cousins discharged from hospital
4:26 PM Fri 12 March, 2010

Ben Cousins was discharged from The Epworth Hospital late this afternoon.

He was admitted yesterday after suffering abdominal pain and cramping.

As a precaution tests were carried out during the course of the day.

“Ben was found to be suffering from a slight gastric inflammation,” Richmond General Manager of Football Craig Cameron said.

“He will rest up over the weekend and he will be back at training on Monday,” Cameron said.
