6 PACK - Richmond
Herald-Sun 2010 AFL Magazine
THU 18 MAR 2010, Page N31

PREMIERSHIP CLOCK: The rebuild begins again

6-Pack:
Brett Deledio
Chris Newman
Trent Cotchin
Ben Cousins
Jack Riewoldt
Nathan Foley

Mr Consistent
Brett Deledio
can become the first Richmond player in almost 50 years, and the third in the club's history, to win three consecutive best-and-fairest awards. One suspects the 22-year-old midfielder can still go up a gear in terms of his on-field influence. A critical player if the Tigers want to be competitive.

Follow the leader
Chris Newman
gets in as much for his leadership as his own game. Despite a solid personal season in which he finished third in the best-and-fairest, the defender had a horror initiation to the captaincy. Will face some more difficulties with a young group this year, but somehow needs to keep them together.

Please stay fit
Nothing makes Tiger fans more nervous than the state of Trent Cotchin's body. We all know what this sublimely gifted player can deliver. But he managed only 10 games last season and was on a modified early pre-season program. A star when he is right to go.

Class act
Ben Cousins
finished fifth in the club best-and-fairest in his first year back and would have placed if not for missing seven games with injury.

He is one of only two 30-somethings left at Punt Rd (there were six last year) and will yet again be a valuable asset on the field and set the example for a young group.

Time to step up
Jack Riewoldt and Mitch Morton
are crucial to the forward structure after Richo's retirement. They kicked 73 goals between them last year (Riewoldt 32 and Morton 41) but need to do that, and more, in 2010. If Riewoldt can kick straight, he can be a major weapon.

Please come back
Nathan Foley
is a must if the Tigers want to at least be competitive this season. But fans have every right to be a little worried. He missed the last eight weeks of 2009 due to an ankle injury and had minor surgery in January. The Tigers desperately need him back.

these are the "6" players "I" think are most important!

Luke McGuane - if McGuane can play the whole season at CHB and improve his kicking skills, he will become our next Premiership CHB.

Richard Tambling - Tambling needs to become, "DANGEROUS". i believe he is just a good player that will have 11 good matches and 11 average matches. Tambling, i believe needs to start playing in the midfield and rest on the half forward line or half back line depending how Richmond are playing. Tambling can be an Adam Cooney influentual player. Tambling is nearly a 100-match player and can not have any excuses to "go missing" during matches. Tambling needs to be influentual for Richmond to be a Premiership team.

Jack Riewoldt - simply this season is a massive season in Riewoldt's career so far. Riewoldt will be our genuine "Key Position Forward" in 2010. i am expecting Riewoldt to be "gone missing" this season, considering Riewoldt will take the "Best Defender". Riewoldt's work ethic and attitude will be the most important factor for Richmond's forward line. if Riewoldt can take his cousins work ethic and attitude into his own style, Riewoldt will be an elite Australian Footballer.

Jayden Post - it is harsh and to early for Post to be one of Richmond's most important player, but here are my reasons. 2010, will be Post's second AFL season, however Post in his short AFL career has shown me, along with many more Richmond supporters, that Post "Can Play". the question is which position? Essendon's Michael Hurley comes to mind with i think of Post. where is Hurley's best position? Post can take a mark which in current Australian Football, "IS GOLD!". as most Richmond supporter know, he has been training at CHB because of his ability to read the football and take that mark. i believe Post should be playing at CHF! Post can fly and mark. a simple "kick it high and long to Post" will work 7/10 times during a match, I BELIEVE! but ... Post could be that "Swing Man" just like Justin Leppitch was during Leppitch's early career.

Tyrone Vickery - Vickery is Richmond's genuine only promising Ruckmen. with Simmonds towards the end of his "OK-Good Career", Graham with question marks and Browne still young and developing, Vickery becomes an important player for the future and for the "NOW". like Post, harsh and too early to call, however what "I" have seen from Vickery is pleasing. a genuine Ruckmen-rest-forward. if Vickery can play the whole 2010 season, he will become Richmond's next Premiership Ruckmen.

Daniel Jackson - Jackson can become a Tyson Edwards. Jackson from last season is growing as an Australian Footballer and leader of Richmond. Jackson is tough at the Football, physically strong and has a long penetrating kick of the Football. Jackson can become that "Tyson Edwards; Very Good Consistant Footballer" that Richmond needs. however, playing in the midfield is not an easy task. Jackson is not quick and can be very slow making quick decisions with the Football. i believe Jackson is that young (24), strong and hard Footballer that we need for the "NOW" and the future. Jackson, to me, eliminates Shane Tuck, Adam Thomson, Thomas Hislop from Richmond. i believe Jackson could Captain Richmond. Jackson off-field, is a very intelligent young man studying Commerce at Melbourne University after playing Australian Football in Year 12 and receiving an ENTER score of 96 back in 2004. Jackson is that "Good Player" like Tambling, that needs to start making and having a massive influence during matches.

Overall - these "6" players i have selected are for the NOW and FUTURE. i did not select the few "Class Players" we have, because like every other AFL Club, those "Good Players" who can turn into a "Class Player" makes a Premiership Team. in my opinion, Richmond's list has a lot of "Good Players". however those players, "Go Missing" in matches. if you have realised something about the six players i have selected, it should be that they are all Under 24's. come 2014, most of them will be in the "Peak-Career Stage", which could result in Richmond's 11th Premiership. in 2010, those six players i will keep a very close eye on. "The Spine" of a Premiership is very important, which is why i have selected these six.

2014:

?             McGuane (27)                  ?
?        Post (25)/McGuane (27)         ?
?       Jackson (28)/Tambling (28)      ?
?      Riewoldt (26)/Post (25)            ?
?      Riewoldt (26)/Vickery (24)        ?
Foll: Vickery (24), Jackson (28), Tambling (28)

I take it you mean quick in decision making..... which is a fault at times..... speed wise Jacko is one of the quickest at the Club.
(BTW he'll be 24 on Anzac day)
