Tigers expect cubs to grow fast
The Age
April 4, 2010

RICHMOND midfielder Daniel Jackson expects the young Tigers to learn fast from their season-opening 56-point thrashing by Carlton.

The Tigers face what looms as an even tougher task against the Western Bulldogs at the MCG today.

But Jackson said they would benefit from some players having their first taste of AFL football and coach Damien Hardwick's game plan being given its first major test. ''We've been preaching all summer a whole lot of new things that we're going to be sticking to week in, week out, and [the Carlton game] was the first chance we were able to go out there and try it on the big stage,'' he said.

''We started to implement some of those things right and there's a few things that we still need to work on.''

The Tigers fielded three debutants in round one - Dustin Martin, Relton Roberts and Ben Nason - and Jackson said coming to terms with life as an AFL footballer could be overwhelming.

''Sometimes, as a young bloke, you're out there and you're a bit overawed,'' he said. ''But we just need those young guys to, as quick as they can, learn that it's about the team and feel a bit more comfortable.

''There are certainly a lot of things we need to work on and improve on, but we were in the game [last week] for a lot of it and it was probably the small things, not capitalising on chances, fundamental skill errors [that cost us].

''You're going to get that when you have a young side - Ben Nason missing his first couple of shots on goal, kicking the third - maybe next week he kicks all three.''

But Jackson said it was improving defensively that would make the most noticeable early impact.

The Tigers have regained small defender Jake King from suspension and added key-position prospect Jayden Post to replace Ben Cousins (knee) and Roberts (club-imposed suspension).

Happy to see Post in the side allowing McGuane a chance to go forward (hope this gives us more muscle and height in the F50) but Kingy..... Kingy is a good average toiler at best who fights to succeed regardless of his ability. If I could get every player on our list Kings mind set we would be a champion team in no time but he hasn't the skills nor talent to play at AFL level particularly in a poor developing side like ours. The only place I could imagine him having a vaguely positive impact is as a tagger but the opposition love to draw him one out into our backline where his height and footskills are terribly exposed.

Love the guys attitude but I would prefer someone such as Dea/Webberley(backline) or Contin (midfield -when elevated) than attempting the same old tricks over and over again.

Players such as Nason and Farmer will be better for the run last week and should start to be more consistent in their performance

Jacko should learn how to kick the footy before anyone thinks he can become a Richmond captain  :help

Jacko IS a future captain. ;)

That's not as far fetched as it may seem at first glance.

Amen to that.  So many goals came from Jackson disposals that failed to hit a target.

Jacko cannot be captain based on the fact he is an excellent speaker.
He is a third tier midfielder or second tier midfielder at best at our club.
Has too many deficiencies in his disposal. Was awful tonight.

Jackson should play bootless, number 1 team rule run behind Jacko to receive a handball. He simply cannot foot the sherrin.

Is a good run with player should stick to that and stop chasing the ball. The opposition play with 23 when Jacko kicks it.
Go Tigers!

Not after yesterday... for mine he was the most disappointing "senior" player out there

Why.... see Ramps quote below
