SOUTH Australia has kicked off its 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships campaign in impressive fashion, with an emphatic 65-point win over Western Australia at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The slippery conditions were expected to trouble the taller South Aussies, but they played what AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan described as the state's "best half of footy" in the history of the championships.
The final scores were 19.12 (126) to 8.13 (61).
Prospective top-five draft pick Harley Bennell got Western Australia off to the perfect start, kicking the opening goal of the game, but South Australia piled on the next seven to lead by 43 points at quarter time.
South Australia continued to dominate in the second term, displaying slick passages of play often seen at the highest level.
Key forward Jamie Solly kicked two goals in five minutes to help extend the home side's lead to 63 points at the main change.
Western Australia mounted a challenge in the third quarter, with Bennell kicking three goals, but gale force winds saw just two more added in the final term.
South Australian utility Sam Day showed glimpses of why he's regarded as one of the most talented players in this year's draft talent pool, with two classy snaps on either side of his body.
However, it was a relative unknown, Lewis Hender, who stole the show.
Hender, a bottom-aged player from Keith in country South Australia, starred in the first half, kicking four goals.
Scott Lycett and Daniel Gorringe were dominant in the ruck and gave impressive midfielders Brodie Smith, Jared Polec and Matthew Rankine first use of the ball.
Glenelg defender Sebastian Tape also nullified the influence of fancied key-position prospect Jack Darling.
The under-18 championships will continue at the MCG on Sunday, with Vic Metro to meet Vic Country.
