U18s: Ball-magnet Miles star of NSW/ACT win
By Tim Roman
4.44pm Sat 22 May, 2010

NSW/ACT    4.6    6.6    11.9    15.2 (102)
NT             1.3    2.5    7.10    8.13 (61)

NT: May 4, Staunton 1, Munkara 1, Ah Mat-Watkins 1, Henry 1

Best
NSW/ACT: Miles, Bruce, Segrave, Aylett, Townsend, Mabon
NT: May, Edwards, Staunton, Jones, Lawton

-------------------------------------------------

NSW/ACT has kicked off its 2010 NAB AFL Under-18s campaign with a comprehensive 41-point win over the Northern Territory at Blacktown Oval in Sydney.

Spearheaded by an outstanding 43-possession game by ball-magnet Anthony Miles, the Rams led at every change and pulled away in the last quarter to record a comfortable win in front of their home fans.

Miles was easily the most dominant player on the ground, winning plenty of contested ball and getting forward often to also contribute three goals.

He was ably assisted by tall forward Josh Bruce, who bagged five goals in a powerhouse display.

The Northern Territory had their own forward target in Steven May, the Southern Districts player slotting four goals to give his team some chance at three-quarter time before NSW/ACT finished the stronger.

Greater Western Sydney coach Kevin Sheedy was on hand for this game in the heart of Sydney’s west and the legendary coach witnessed a powerful first-half performance from the Rams, who kept NT to just two goals up until half time.

The third quarter was more of a shootout; both teams kicking five goals before the Rams powered away in the last with Miles getting his hands on the ball at will.

The NT team now head home to Darwin for a game against South Australia on June 5 while the victorious NSW/ACT can look forward to another game at Blacktown against Vic Country on June 6.

U18s: Brown the difference as Tassie overruns Queensland

Brown the difference as Tassie overruns Queensland
By Ben Broad
7:06 PM Sat 22 May, 2010

Tasmania 10.9 (69) d Queensland 8.14 (62)

GOALS
Tas: Ben Brown 5, Joshua Green 2, Matthew Dilger, Rhys Mott, Rudy Barrett
Qld: Sam Michael 3, Jackson Rolfe, Thomas Holland, David Meli, Liam Rutledge, Luke Shreeve

BEST
Tas: Joshua Green, Rhys Mott, Sam Darley, Ben Brown, Jacob Gillbee, Andrew Phillips
Qld: Jake Crawford, Michael Hutchinson, Adam Oxley, Henry Schade, David Meli

----------------------------------------

TASMANIA has kicked off the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships in style by overrunning Queensland by seven points.

In perfect conditions for football at Sydney’s Blacktown Olympic Park, Tasmania finished stronger than its northern rival to win 10.9 (69) to 8.14 (62).

The win ensured former Fitzroy midfielder Matthew Armstrong’s first game as coach of his state under-18 team was an enjoyable one, with Tassie having to come from behind to earn the points.

The match was tight throughout, with scores level at half time and Queensland taking a two-point lead into the final term.

But Tasmania enjoyed much of the play in the final quarter and booted 3.6 to 2.3 to snatch a morale-boosting win on the opening day of the championships.

Last year the two teams were the bottom-ranked teams in the carnival.

Ben Brown was perhaps the difference between the sides, with the key forward booting five goals in a low-scoring affair, including one in the last term, to help guide Tassie to victory.

Promising midfielder Josh Green was also a standout, collecting 35 possessions, laying six tackles and booting two goals. His final-quarter goal from tight-up on the boundary was a highlight and underlined his potential.

Fellow onballer Sam Darley was also prolific, with his run from defence crucial in getting Armstrong’s team home.

For Queensland, key forward Sam Michael was terrific as he provided a target all day for his team. He booted three goals and took eight marks - three of which were contested - to show his value in the air.

Papua New Guinean David Meli, who has an international scholarship with Essendon, was great in the midfield as he accumulated 28 possessions and bombed the ball inside 50 on eight occasions, while Adam Oxley worked his way into the game for Queensland well.

After a slow start, he finished with 10 marks and 19 disposals but it was his creativeness and run that set him apart from many on the field.

But in the end it wasn’t enough as Tasmania finished the stronger, and kicked off its campaign in style.

SA belts WA despite Bennell's haul
By Katrina Gill
Sat 29 May, 2010

South Australia         8.4   14.17   17.7   19.12 (126)
Western Australia     3.9     4.4      8.9     8.13 (61)

SA: Smith, Polec, Hender, Rankine, Solly, Gray, Tape, Lycett, McCarthy, Day
WA: Bennell, Jones, Wilson, Conca, Elisseou, Monaco

-----------------------------------------------------------

SOUTH Australia has kicked off its 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships campaign in impressive fashion, with an emphatic 65-point win over Western Australia at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The slippery conditions were expected to trouble the taller South Aussies, but they played what AFL talent manager Kevin Sheehan described as the state's "best half of footy" in the history of the championships.

The final scores were 19.12 (126) to 8.13 (61).

Prospective top-five draft pick Harley Bennell got Western Australia off to the perfect start, kicking the opening goal of the game, but South Australia piled on the next seven to lead by 43 points at quarter time.

South Australia continued to dominate in the second term, displaying slick passages of play often seen at the highest level.

Key forward Jamie Solly kicked two goals in five minutes to help extend the home side's lead to 63 points at the main change.

Western Australia mounted a challenge in the third quarter, with Bennell kicking three goals, but gale force winds saw just two more added in the final term.

South Australian utility Sam Day showed glimpses of why he's regarded as one of the most talented players in this year's draft talent pool, with two classy snaps on either side of his body.

However, it was a relative unknown, Lewis Hender, who stole the show.

Hender, a bottom-aged player from Keith in country South Australia, starred in the first half, kicking four goals.

Scott Lycett and Daniel Gorringe were dominant in the ruck and gave impressive midfielders Brodie Smith, Jared Polec and Matthew Rankine first use of the ball.

Glenelg defender Sebastian Tape also nullified the influence of fancied key-position prospect Jack Darling.

The under-18 championships will continue at the MCG on Sunday, with Vic Metro to meet Vic Country.

U18s: Country beats Metro in battle of the Vics

Country wins Vics battle
By Luke Holmesby and Jason McCartney

Vic Country   16.9 (105)
Vic Metro        9.9 (63)

Goals:
Vic Country: Lucas Cook 5, Jed Lamb 4, Devon Smith 3, Tomas Bugg 1, Tim Northe 1, Dyson Heppell 1, Tom Lynch 1
Vic Metro: Patrick Karnezis 2, Ben Jacobs 2, Viv Michie 2, Alex Johnson 1, Thomas Libertore 1, Darcy Barden 1

Best:
Vic Country: Mitch Hallahan, Lucas Cook, Andrew McInnes, Jed Lamb, Devon Smith, Jayden Pitt
Vic Metro: Cameron Guthrie, Billy Longer, Andrew Gaff, Ryan Lester, Thomas Libertore, Thomas Scheider

----------------------------------------------------------------------

THE COUNTRY boys have won an emphatic victory over the city slickers in the Victorian derby at the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Vic Country defeated Vic Metro by seven goals, scoring 16. 9 (105) to 9.9 (63) at the MCG on Sunday.

The scores were level at quarter-time but the Vic Country team coached by Robert Hyde ran away in the second term and did not look back.

North Ballarat forward Lucas Cook starred for the country side, booting five goals for the day including three in three minutes in a purple patch in the second quarter.

At 194cm, Cook is sure to come under the watchful eye of AFL scouts.

He was ably assisted by mid-sized forward Jed Lamb from Yarram who bobbed up to kick four. Lamb showed dash and competitiveness that could prove to be a vital part of Vic Country’s campaign this year.

For Vic Metro, future Bulldogs father-son selections Thomas Liberatore (26 touches) and Mitch Wallis (25) both did well out of the midfield, but their best player was Oakleigh Chargers’ onballer Andrew Gaff.

Gaff won 31 touches out of the centre and his work rate stood out all afternoon.

Defender Max Otten - the younger brother of Adelaide’s Andy - played a solid game in defence and rebounded well.

Thomas Schneider showed impeccable vision for Vic Metro while Ryan Lester was good overhead in defence.

Bottom age Vic Country forward Devon Smith showed some creativity as a small forward. He had a shot in the opening minutes and finished with 3.2 for the match. But at 173cm he may be a little short to be a sure thing as an AFL prospect.

Gaff making a real run at getting himself picked at No 4 in the draft. Its also interesting to note that he playing in the centre, last year he was on a hbf. Thats a really good sign IMHO. If hes a true mid and not just a flanker then he must come into serious calculations for us.

U18s: Onballer Andrew Gaff shows why he heads draft lists (Age)

Onballer shows why he heads draft lists
EMMA QUAYLE
May 31, 2010

ONBALLER Andrew Gaff yesterday confirmed his place at the front of the draft pack, compiling 31 possessions as his Vic Metro side was beaten by Vic Country in their opening match of the under-18 carnival.

Gaff's anticipation around the packs and ability to work into space stood out at the MCG, the Oakleigh midfielder racking up 14 hardball-gets during Metro's 42-point loss.

Country forward Lucas Cook was another to stand out, not only impressing with his clean marking and five goals but dishing off 11 handballs in a 20-disposal match.

Advertisement: Story continues belowFellow forward Jed Lamb kicked four goals in more freaky fashion and both players were well served by their midfield.

While the highly rated Luke Parker had a quiet day, the strong-bodied Mitch Hallahan impressed, Shaun Atley pieced together 19 understated possessions, and Devon Smith kicked three goals while also winning plenty of the ball and urging his side forward.

For Metro, Gaff was assisted by Tom Liberatore and Mitch Wallis, midfielders who will almost certainly cost the Western Bulldogs their first and second-round draft choices this year and be well worth it.

Liberatore's first three quarters were outstanding, his 26 possessions including 12 hardball-gets. Wallis made a quieter start but became more creative and influential as the match wound on.

Ben Jacobs and Max Otten, brother of Adelaide player Andy, who did some cool-headed things in defence, are other Metro players to watch as the carnival unfolds in the next five weeks.

Metro will next play Tasmania at Bellerive Oval in Hobart on Saturday. Country will take on NSW/ACT in Blacktown on Sunday.

South Australia, boasting several prospective first-round picks, beat Western Australia by 65 points at AAMI Stadium.

Harley Bennell, a top-three draft chance, kicked six goals for WA, with another possible top pick, key-position prospect Sam Day, among SA's best.

The fact GC17 have already committed to Swallow with one of their top 3 picks means we should get one of Darling, Day or Gaff at the very least. We still need more quality KPPs and genuine gun mids to add to the young cubs we've already got so best available at pick 4.

Eye-catchers: U18 Championships Rd 1
By Kevin Sheehan
Wed 02 June, 2010

Harley Bennell (WA)
A shining light on a dark day for WA. Started in the midfield then pushed forward, kicking six of his team’s eight goals, including four in a superb last quarter. Looks certain to be snapped up early in the draft.

Sam Day (SA)
The 195cm Sturt product has all the tools to make it as a tall forward in the AFL. Showed a great leap, strong hands and goal-kicking ability on both sides of the body in the win over WA.

Lucas Cook (Vic Country)
Had 20 possessions, took seven marks and kicked five goals in his team’s win over Vic Metro. From North Ballarat in the TAC Cup, Cook is 194cm and looks an outstanding key forward prospect.

Andrew Gaff (Vic Metro)
The left-footer from the Oakleigh Chargers had 31 possessions and laid three tackles in a sweeping role across half-back. Looks in the mould of Lions star Luke Power with his hard running and clean hands.

Anthony Miles (NSW/ACT)
Had a day out against NT with a whopping 43 possessions and three goals. From North Albury Football Club and the Murray Bushrangers, he looks a certain GWS target.

Steven May (NT)
The strong-marking key forward was the dominant big man on the ground in NT’s loss to NSW/ACT, taking nine marks and kicking four goals. Gold Coast FC has priority on him.

Josh Green (Tasmania)
Turned in a super-impressive 35-possession performance in Tassie’s win over Queensland. Ran hard, used the ball well and kicked a superb goal from the boundary.

David Meli (Queensland)
A small forward from PNG, Meli’s use of the ball on both feet was outstanding as he racked up 28 possessions, including eight inside 50s and a smart goal. Is on an international scholarship with Essendon.
