---------------------------

AFTER a round-one shocker against Hawthorn, Melbourne is now just out of the top eight on percentage after notching up an emphatic 55-point victory over Richmond at the MCG on Sunday.

The Demons 20.13 (133) defeated the Tigers 11.12 (133) to record consecutive victories for the first time since rounds 14 and 15, 2009.

After leading by just six points at the main break, Melbourne blew the game apart in the third quarter, kicking seven goals to zip, resulting in a 50-point lead at the final change.

Melbourne skipper James McDonald continued to belie his status as the AFL's fifth oldest player, racking up 14 touches in the first term, before finishing with 30.

Brent Moloney (37 disposals), Brad Green (four goals and 24 disposals) and Colin Sylvia (five goals), in his comeback match from a broken jaw, were also outstanding.

For the Tigers, Richmond forward Jack Riewoldt worked hard to finish with three goals. Debutant David Astbury also booted three majors. Shane Tuck (31 disposals) had the most touches for the Tigers.

Errant goal kicking had been a topic of conversation in the lead-up to round four, but it was a non-issue in a highly-entertaining first quarter with 13.3 registered, including 8.1 from Melbourne.

The last time the Demons kicked eight goals in an opening term was round 20, 2000 against Fremantle at Etihad Stadium. For the record, it kicked 8.2 back then.

There were some fine individual efforts throughout the match, including two brilliant goals.

In-form Dee Ricky Petterd made a diving knock-on from the boundary line - a la Wayne Harmes - to set up an opportunistic Matthew Bate goal in the first term.

Not to be outdone, in the second quarter Tiger Mitch Morton snapped a high one from the pocket, which wobbled through for a top goal.

If this guy thought Tuck was one of our best and Riewoldt wasn't then he must be smashed off his face right now from spending the whole day in the bar.  Fair dinkum.

Riewoldt needs to do some work on kicking for goal, we dont have enough good players without him wasting chance after chance to kick a goal.

Yep, but his 4 quarter effort and leadership on the ground was head and shoulders above most others today.

Melbourne smash Richmond at MCG

MELBOURNE is knocking on the door of the eight after thrashing Richmond by 55 points at the MCG.
Melbourne, last year's wooden spooners, clambered further away from this year's cellar with their second successive victory, thumping hapless Richmond by 55 points at the MCG.

The Demons went on a third quarter rampage to set up the 20.13 (133) to 11.12 (78) win after the young Tigers had fought manfully in the first half.

But five goals to Colin Sylvia and exceptional midfield performances from Brent Moloney and skipper James McDonald guided the Demons to rare successive wins.

Melbourne, who had posted just seven wins in the previous two seasons, led by six points at halftime against a spirited Tigers outfit who briefly threatened a shock despite being heavily undermanned.

The Demons were held goalless in the second term, but flicked the switch after halftime - booting seven goals to the Tigers' two behinds.

Forward Brad Green, who finished with four goals, and clearance specialist Moloney helped Melbourne take total control in the third term.

Moloney finished with 37 possessions, nine tackles and nine clearances, however he will front the tribunal this week for his bump on Ben Nason in the second quarter.

McDonald continued on from a strong first half to gather 30 touches for the match.

The Tigers remain winless in their opening four matches, bottom of the table and warm wooden spoon favourites.
All their defeats this season have been by 55 points or more.

Richmond defender Kelvin Moore was outstanding for his well beaten side, while Jack Riewoldt and first-gamer David Astbury booted three goals apiece.

Melbourne president Jim Stynes is at the game and greeted fans along the boundary line before the game, just a week after he was bed-ridden after his latest cancer treatment.

Riedwoldt is a disgrace.
Kicks a point and just walks to his alloted spot in the zone, he actually walks with his back to the play, while the opposition are out the otherside, spare me please :banghead :banghead :banghead

Facts are this.
Reiwoldt kicks a point and walks back to his alloted space in the zone ::)
Tambling 7 kicks 5 handballs, have had enough of him.
Trade at years end if he is of any value.
Doesnt work hard enough, walks down the ground when we havent go the ball , aint a good sign.

then trade him at the end of the year and take another forward with the clubs first pick. At least 2 quality forwards available, maybe 1 will be available at pick 4.

Never been a fan of Riewoldt last chance this year. 60 odd goals this year or trade him.

If the club thinks that either Jack Darling or Sam Day will fall to pick 4 then we should trade Riewoldt and get another type of player or picks instead. We have so many holes to fill it aint funny.

So what TF should he do jack? Dont get me wrong his kicking for goal is becoming a serious worry, but what should he do after he misses? Beg the umpire for another go?

did he get back to his spot in the zone before the kickout?
