RICHMOND made it back-to-back wins and in the process put a huge hole in the Brisbane Lions’ finals aspirations with a 19-point win at the Gabba on Saturday night.

In a scrappy and at times comical encounter, the Tigers led from start to finish to run out victors 15.15 (105) to 12.14 (86).

They steadied the ship in the final quarter after the Lions got to within five points, as first Andrew Collins spun and goaled from 45m, then Jack Riewoldt took a strong contested mark and goaled to restore a handy lead.

Richmond never looked back.

Despite lacking skill at times, the Tigers worked harder and deserved their second win in succession after leading at every break.

It was a miserable 200th game for Lions full-forward Brendan Fevola, who kicked just one goal - from a free kick - and mixed that with an air-swing, helicopter punt and a couple of total miskicks.

He was not on his own, however, and the Lions have now lost eight of their past nine games and slumped to a 5-8 record ahead of the mid-season break.

Not only was the home side missing skipper Jonathan Brown with a groin injury, but Brownlow Medallist Simon Black joined the stars in the stands after being a late withdrawal with a virus.

But the Tigers were terrific, led by Riewoldt’s three goals and Brett Deledio’s 33 possessions.

They had workers all over the ground with Shane Tuck (29), Ben Cousins (27) and classy youngster Dustin Martin (26) prominent.

Riewoldt further stamped himself as a star of the game with a number of strong contested marks against Daniel Merrett and his crucial fourth-quarter goal helping to get his team home.

The only injured concern for the Tigers was full-back Luke McGuane, who hobbled off in the second quarter with a leg injury after blanketing Fevola.

The Tigers have now joined Adelaide and West Coast on three wins.

THERE was no Jonathan Brown and Simon Black for Brisbane at the Gabba tonight.

There will be no finals for the Lions either after they crashed to 19-point loss to the last-placed Richmond.

Black was a late withdrawal after succumbing to a virus that kept him out of training on Friday and his absence was critical. It robbed Brisbane of a ball winner and it robbed the contest of class.

There is no sugar coating it, it was one ugly game of football. The Auskick game at halftime was more pleasing to the eye.

Brisbane's 2010 is looking even worse after crashing to their eighth loss in nine outings while Richmond claimed its third win in the past month with spearhead Jack Riewoldt kicking three goals for the visitors.

Rival full forward Brendan Fevola had an unhappy night in his 200th AFL match kicking just one major after being escorted out on to the ground by his children Mia, Leni and Lulu before tossing the coin.

Fev had a shocker. Nothing came off for the Coleman medallist. It is a game he will want to forget in a hurry. He is not alone though. On either side.

A lack of skill, poor execution and occasionally comical gaffes from both sides made the game a eyesore.

The Lions trailled by 16 at quarter-time, 20 at the main break and reduced Richmond's buffer to 14 at the last change and closed to within five early in the last term.

But the Tigers - led well by veteran Ben Cousins - managed to kick away in the dying stages to give their long-suffering supporters hope that a wooden spoon is not heading to Punt Rd this year.

A running goal to Shane Edwards with four minutes to go put the game on ice for the Tigers and put the crowd of 28,415 out its misery.

The third quarter was horrible. Riewoldt's high-flying mark on the Stanlet St wing was the highlight.

Matt White tripping his own feet and missing the ball completely while trying to kick quickly followed by Brisbane bombing a certain goal with Fevola unmarked in the goal square were the lowlights.

If Brisbane was playing any other side other than the 16th placed club, they would have been trailling by far more at the main break.

The Lions lacked urgency and intensity and were still in the contest due to two goals being gifted to them from 50m penalties as well as Richmond's inability to punish the home side to the full extent.

Brisbane's only points in the first 14 minutes came from rushed behinds until Brent Staker kicked truly. The delivery into the forward line was terrible at times.

Cornelius chipped in with two goals after strong marks to earn his call-up but the Brisbane forwards had precious few opportunities early. Fevola had just two possessions to his name at halftime.

The Lions conceded a number of goals directly from turnovers and failed to apply enough physical pressure on the Tigers who were enthusiastic but generally lacked execution.

Richmond's Luke McGuane rolled his ankle in the first half and took no further part in the game while Brisbane's Amon Buchanan was stretchered from the field after landing awkwardly in the second half.

Tigers find spirit to win (Age)

Tigers find spirit to win
ANDREW STAFFORD, BRISBANE
June 20, 2010

FOR a side that before last night had won just two games for the season, the Tigers' collective tails could hardly have been further up than going into this match. While fans pin their hopes on Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin, coach Damien Hardwick is just trying to knit together a genuine team.

The Brisbane Lions, for their part, resemble a deflating hot-air balloon. After rising rapidly at the beginning of the season, injuries to key players have sucked more and more air from their campaign. The loss of decorated centre Simon Black to a virus before the match was another blow.

It made for a scrappy, sometimes comically poor spectacle, and it presented the best chance for the Tigers to notch their second win in a row since rounds 17 and 18 last year. The fact that they actually made the most of the opportunity to prevail by 19 points was impressive for a side that didn't look like winning even one game not so long ago.

For the Lions, it saw the balloon finally crumple in a heap. They look a side bereft of spirit and hope right now. Without Black, it was as if they had lost their heart. Brendan Fevola's effort in his 200th game might rank among his poorest, but he wasn't helped by what was happening up the field.

It took 10 minutes for the Tigers to kick the first goal through Riewoldt. Shane Edwards followed with another, the beneficiary of more soft defence in the goal square.

With Fevola cold, Brent Staker and second-gamer Aaron Cornelius became the Lions' focal points in attack. Cornelius had struggled to get a game in attack in front of Fevola and Jonathan Brown, if Brown were to come back next round, Fevola might find his place under threat.

By the second quarter, Cornelius was doing more than anyone to keep the Lions in the contest, picking the ball off his laces and dishing off to Jack Redden for an early goal, then sending a helicopter through for his second from an excellent contested mark.

But the Tigers were producing the more committed effort and replied with the next three goals, the third kicked off a step from 50 by Martin.

By that point, the Tigers were out to a four-goal lead and might have buried the home side then and there if not for needlessly conceding two quick 50-metre penalties to give majors to Staker and Todd Banfield.

And that summed up the tone of the match: it seemed it was the Tigers to lose more than the Lions to win. They had the more even spread of contributors, were more committed at the contest and had more options in attack. But they are still anchored to the bottom of the ladder.

Slowly, the Lions began to grind their way back. It was only two goals to one in the third quarter, but enough to give the home side and the frustrated fans some momentum heading into the final change.

Staker's third goal, early in the last, closed the margin to just five points.

It was the Tigers, though, who found the extra mettle, with Riewoldt's marking skills again to the fore as he nailed his third goal over a hapless Daniel Merrett.

Scrambled late goals to Mitch Farmer and Edwards sealed the deal, with the unlikely Andrew Collins bobbing up with his third to ice the game.

PLAYER WATCH
Richmond: Shane Tuck
may have been out of favour earlier in the season but there is no doubting his ticker or work rate. He bored in at the clearances all night to finish among his side's best.

Brisbane Lions: Brendan Fevola could hardly have been worse in his 200th match, scoring only the one goal (from a free kick) and unable to make a contribution in any other department. He was shown up by his younger counterpart Aaron Cornelius, while Jack Redden continues to produce in the middle.

WHERE THE MATCH WAS WON
Early and late, with the Tigers jumping the Lions in the first quarter for an early lead and then putting them away with a five-goal last quarter. Although prone to running themselves into needless trouble, the Tigers played the more daring and committed football throughout. Their opponents looked tentative by comparison.

WHERE THE MATCH WAS LOST
For the Lions, they might make the excuse that Simon Black's withdrawal was the fatal blow. Certainly the Lions look to have lost all rhythm and system as injuries have torn apart their team, but this was a disturbingly soft effort from a side that had promised much more this year.

BEST
Richmond: Tuck, Graham, Cousins, Deledio, Martin, Collins.
Brisbane: Johnstone, Banfield, Redden, Rockliff, Rischitelli.
